It's funny, you look back at the Woodstock and and Monterey Pop films and the solos weren't that long at all!

Cream and The Dead really set the standard for the overindulgent rock solo. And of course, that was fueled by acid, grass and a kitchen sink of crazy mind-altering garbage lacing the veins of the crowd.

Jazz guys can stay inventive for 20 minutes. Rock guys, about 20 seconds.

A true solo has got to have a certain degree of freedom from cliche and riffs. I know exactly what stock riff Jimmy Vaughn is about to play next. I have no idea what notevBuddy Guy is about to play next.
A solo is just that, an insrument playing a part by itself, or "Solo". Improv does not a solo make (it sure helps, though).

Last night I saw the Foo Fighters in concert at the Target Center in Minneapolis. The best part of the show was when they played "This Is A Call" off their first album (Foo Fighters); they added a blues interlude to the middle of the song where Dave Grohl and Chris Shiflett dueled back and forth with different blues licks. A bit out of character for the band, but it was awesome to hear and the entire crowd went nuts. Maybe this is a sign that guitar solos and improvisational playing are on the way back in.

Try to imagine a Derek Trucks concert without solos. I'd want my money back for sure! Those heads they play are pretty disposable. Everybody comes to hear Derek's incredible improvs. Though a couple of his instrumental melodies are pretty awesome too.

That's a subjective argument and one not worth getting into.

Well, like Cream and SRV, Nirvana did perform some 20-minute long songs, but that's just because Kurt would pass out in the middle of them and it took a while to locate a defibrillator.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria.

No, the music and lyrics aren't for everybody, but as for someone mentioning earlier something about no concept albums? The whole BAND is a concept story. Look into it.

Anyway, I saw them live Tuesday night in Nashville, and Claudio (and the other guy whose name I can't think of) pull of some AMAZING guitar work, and they ended their set with a guitar duel after the song "Welcome Home"

Solos behind the head, playing with teeth, playing while running from one end of the stage to the other.....all alive and well with Coheed.

I think part of the problem was 80's "cock-rock." Many (NOT all, but many) didn't really solo... they just played the scales they knew faster and faster. It was called shredding, and not many people considered that soloing. So people got kinda turned off by that.

Then, of course, our world became much faster-paced, and nobody really cared to sit through a solo anymore.

Solos may be coming back, but you still have to dig to find 'em. You aren't gonna hear much Derek Trucks being played on Top 40 radio and on MTV, now are you?

To me, however, a guitar solo is what we got in the 60's and 70's. Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Buzz Feiten, Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Paul Kossoff, Duane Allman, Robby Krieger (although he's a much better guitarist now then he was when he played with The Doors), etc. Obviously, the 80's and 90's weren't a total waste as they did bring about guitarists like Randy Rhoads, Slash, Kurt Cobain (I don't care what you say about this, but he had more talent then he cared to use, and if he hadn't died, only God knows what he would have sounded like today... and don't think you know just because you don't like Nirvana... musicians grow), etc.

But people did turn away from it because of "cock-rock," IMO. I also think it's making a comeback, but the "guitar solo revolution" progresses very, very slowly at the moment...

You just described my 70's highschool years. No wonder I never attended class.

I do miss melodic guitar solo's. However, I do not miss the folks trying to play as many notes as fast as they can over a certain time frame.

Brian Stetzer???? seriously, you compare vince gill, who is a good player, to Brian Setzer. Man if i could play half as well as Seztzer i would be happy!!

And to me a solo is a player using the insturment as a voice, to speak for them!! It can be rehearsed or improved, either way!!

And are any of us taking guitar to some different galaxies? We are just playing what we have heard in the past, ,all of us. It was guys like Robert Johnson, Charlie Christian, Eldon Shamblin, now those guys where innovators, and led to guys like Clapton Hendrix, SRV who led to people like us.

And I would say listen to the radio more, I hear Santana on there rather often and he dont sing, so what does he do? Just becuase there are jam bands or lead guitar heavy music doesnt mean that the solo is dead!!! Country music is centered around arrangments with solos, and so is alot of music, just not the mainstream top 40 crap that is on the radio these days....And ask your selves, what do you put on when you get in your car to go home from work?? it isnt pop radio for me

Okay so I'm a guitar player of intermediate ability and a blues fan, but imho a guitar solo in a proper song is an integral part of the song, be it Cocaine or You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now or a lot of Page's best with Zeppellin or Bridge of Sighs - the solo grows from the riffs and builds on them; essentially the guitar solo is the culmination of a proper song and the heart of the song.

When you play a song, you do so how you feel - sometimes chords will fill the page alone, sometimes not, and occasionally you will want to say something with a solo - the amount of notes depends on the individual - not the tune entirely. it's all about what you're trying to say with your axe, heart and soul.
