Kurt Cobain was a junkie and an idiot. Nirvana had a few tunes I could listen to but all in all...they sucked. I remember talking to a studio tech. that said it took him 27 or so tries to get the solo to smells like Teen Spirit right. Now that is some sorry guitar playing. The drummer was the only talented person in the band. Cobain was just a junkie who got lucky. There are a billion other, better guitar players that would not have wasted the break he got.

i respect them alot for potentially saving my life, and making me be me. i still listen to them occasionally but theres a countless better bands out there. Cobain was a $@!&#* guitar player, but he was a good vocalist (that can be argued). really the only talent the band had were the lyrics. even though he says he didn't put that much thought into them, i reckon he was a really talented poet, when he was being serious anyway. that and the fact they put atleast some soul into there playing.
they got me into other bands, which got me into other bands, which got me into other bands, and it goes on and on. almost every band i listen to now (alot....), one way or another i found them through nirvana. heck, i listen to local bands with a fanbase of 10 cause of them

This band gave popular music a much needed kick up the backside in the 90s, much the same as the Sex Pistols in the 70s.
Talent? .....well that's subjective isn't it, when were talking about art.

Kurt Cobain saved rock and roll from the most dismal musical void of its brief existence. He vanished the spandex pants, eye liner and lipstick wearing glam boys to the cornfield of irrelevance where they will ever remain.

Tip: Take a lesson from the fact that he was not a great technical soloist. He is far more relevant to music history than all the shredders combined.

If a band sells that many records, they are relevant. Nobody wants to read whether I like them or not. I am thinking Nirvana and other bands gave a voice to a generation of young folks who had a lot to say. I think this whole Seattle thing was kind of cool.

The band got as far as they did simply because kids liked them, and no doubt found some sort of parallel to there own lives. The life and times of "NIRVANA". They really kicked A@# for a bunch of confused kids from Aberdeen, WA. 8) 8) 8) And I'm an old guy. :)

yeah the 'junkie' jokes and the gun jokes really are just plain ignorant. i garuntee you if the people who make those jokes have bi polar disorder they'd understand why he chose to die the way he did.

kurt saved the music scene of the 90's where in the 80's many big players used digital stuff but never apreciated the sound of analog gear and tube amps kurt helped bring back the authenticity of music plus he gave fender guitars even more credit as a good versatile guitar and showed that having technique doesn't make you a good musician (lets face it he wasn't that big of a guitarrist but he's my idol )

he had one message in his songs that made me who i am... in all his songs i can hear clear messages leading to being yourself and not being ashamed of it and embracing who you are and if people don't like it who gives a hoot? cause you're authentic!!!

R.I.P Kurt you saved music no matter what other people think

i would also like to credit dave grohl and krist novoselic cause they are no less than kurt (kurt was the soul but they have talent too) dave could really drum... if he was still in nirvana today i bet he could have been one of the worlds most famous drummers i also credit his major roll in the foos... krist novoselic did an awesome job complementing the band as a a bassist (only now am i really getting into the basslines of nirvana but if you listen well you could see there is a lot to it) but he's also done well as the new face of nirvana... since kurt's death he's always been there to represent the band in every homenage and exhibit to nirvana

Kurt wasn't a "guitar genius" but he was an icon of Grunge and I don't know why, I love his music (more for lyrics than guitar riffs).

Thats ironic seeing as how Kurt joked about suicide, actually laughed and made jokes about Budd D. something, the politic who killed himself on tv, so no its not ignorant, just black humor, exactly wat Kurt loved

But yeah he was a #$@*&!% beautiful tormented soul who made beautiful art that gave rock n roll a good kick in the $@!. But he was also a junkie who ruined his life, widowed his love, and made his child a bastard. He could have done like Neil Young and recreated himself and stuck it out, but he chose the $@!&#* way out. He was probably the last great singer songwriter that affected people on a global scale. He spoke for a generation and suffered for them. No mistake he made great music, he was a bad guitarist, but he was like Bob Dylan, it was about the melodies and the music, not about how he could play or sing. I mean just here:

"Not really, all of his guitars were cheap, with cheap parts, like literally just like his clothing style, common crap that you can get at music stores and Pawn Shops, he salvaged parts, Ernie Bailey just worked with what he had. Plus theres the fact his guitars tone was basic garage understated rhythm set, its just the fact that 75% of Nirvana's music was recorded and played with some cheap distortion and a solid chorus pedal, which created his sound. Now In Utero era, when he had more cash, he added a SansAmp for his anti solo rants and a Polychorus. Really idk why people would even want to sound like Kurt, he wasent a good guitar player for his experience, all of his music is brilliant song writing and simplicity wise, the guitar parts are cheezy ripoffs with a crappy melody copying solo cleaned up by thick deep chorus and ear bleeding distortion. Pretty much a slowed down Pixies and Bad Brains combo."

"The kid has heart"- Bob Dylan
"He had a touch most guitarists would kill for." -Chuck Berry
"The only person I have any respect for as a songwriter over the last 10 years is Kurt Cobain. He was the perfect cross between Lennon and McCartney...but he was a miserable $@!& at the same time. "- Noel Gallagher

This, basically. I found 3 of my favorite bands directly through Nirvana, and countless others through Nirvana and those 3 bands, yet more through the other bands I found, etc.. Nirvana is pretty much the reason for 95% of my library, in one way or another, be it getting me into the band themselves or a genre.

Trying to play nice, huh? (Me too!)

Did you catch the quotes by Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, and Noel Gallagher in Negative Creep's post? Those are some pretty high compliments from artist that have no need to throw false praise at anyone. :D
