When you say "significant impact" most people automatically think in terms of positive and personal. In actuality the car has had a much more significant impact in the 20th century when you look at its means and repercussions. Manufacturing the car was the motivation for mass assembly which crossed over to almost every other industry, and ultimately the computer. The car was the motivator for the interstate highway system(s) which was an excuse to produce the need for more cars and sell more petroleum based products which resulted in urban sprawl, decentralization of cities, innefficient mass transit systems, environmental changes and a different geopolitical structure through a dependence on foreign oil.

Definitely the car. I think computers are more than significant, and they have caused a generational gap that rivals the early days of rock and roll coming out, but the car has shaped the way we live in this world to a huge degree; both positively and negatively.
