My instrument care plan is pretty simple. If it is dusty, dust it. Use canned air around pickups. Pots need a shot of cleaner every year or two. Check tightness of all screws, nuts, at every string change. Treat rosewood fingerboards day or two before string change. Most important is NEVER leave your instrument anywhere you would not be comfortable, meaning no extreme heat, cold or humidity. I think washing your hands before playing and wiping the instrument and strings down afterwards is responsible behavior that leads to extended string life. I use old gym socks on the strings.
