First off, I mean absolutely no offense to anyone who has purchased a relic'd Fender. If that's what you dig, then you should have it.

I love a nice relic'd guitar, but I want that guitar to be mine and I want to know the story behind every little ding, scratch, finish checking and buckle rash. I wan't to be the cause of all that damage. I wan't to be able to tell the story of the time that chick jumped on my lap while I was holding my axe and it fell to the floor, hitting a mic stand and taking a small chunk out of the lower bout. I want every one of those dings and dents to tell my story with my guitar. Just like I have scars on my body that tell the tale of my life, my guitar should have the scars to tell the story of our life together.

A pre-relic'd guitar doesn't tell any story other then I wanted to buy a brand new beat up guitar to look cool. To me, thats not much of a story at all.

That's exactly what I'm saying!

Summed it up for me to!!!

Same here!

Pretty much Dang-o smacked it on head, yep, s'wat I'm toakin' bou', man, I mean....I'll beat up my own guitar.

I view the relics as a work of art. It's just another kind of finish.

Some are darn purty. And some can even pass as used vintage guitars.

Ask yourself if you're a poser or not. Chose your guitar according to your answer, reliced or not.

Yeah, right. Poser. Like Keith Richards.
.
I'm with orvilleowner. it's just another finish, no stupider than a burst or a bowling ball. It's just a choice to make a guitar look a certain way in order to project a certain image. Which is what a professional musician might want to do.

The real crux of this tired argument is this: why do you care - and what makes you think you should care - what anybody else chooses to do with their guitar?

Here's what I don't like about the Relic Series, and it's probably because I watch too much Antiques Roadshow. The finishes are Shiny and perfect up to were the wood has been exposed, and the edges where the paint/stain meets wood is obviously tooled. The exposed wood is all to evenly stained with something that's supposed to look like sweat, but looks more like unshaken ebony stain aplied lightly and wiped away with a dry cloth. The necks feel sanded, not worn in. They come off like a Faux-Chipendale Wardrobe.

But I don't think everybody should feel that way. I'm glad the custom shop makes them, but I think they should pay a little closer attention to aging.

I think it's just another trend-similar to dropping Floyd Roses into Strats (vintage or otherwise), and pointy guitars, both often seen back in the 80's.

But why would anyone care what I think?

Exactly :P

What I understand from this thread is that relic'ed guitars are impure and for posers, it's not personal, and your guitar has to be personal
Some of the custom shops finest don't have any soul compared to any new-looking strat

Tell your wife she ain't for real because she's wearing make up and she will kick your $@!

@ HamonicaJim; Judging posers or not on their guitar is really bad for music and only tells me that's it's you that's missing soul

It's just an opinion. I personally could care less if you played a hot pink guitar with polka dots, Gravity Jim. It's a matter of taste. And, if this argument (which it's not an argument, it's called a DISCUSSION) is so tired then why waste your time by commenting on it?

What's all of this "poser" talk about? Being a "poser" has nothing to do with what type of guitar you choose to play. If you want to pay 3K for a guitar with a faux rusty bridge then be my guest! I'm just saying that it's not my cup of tea.

That's where the poser talk was coming from

Well, if any finish makes you happy and you can afford it...go for it.

Opinions are like Bung Holes. Without them, we'd Bloat and Die.

I think Gravityjim meant it as, just worry about the tonal aspects, the hardware is what matters, but i don't know of course

Cryingstrat, no offense at all, I just wonder, if you bought a used guitar, it would have scratches, that you didn't make, but thats a part of it's history
Don't you think "This guitar is made of the finest craftsmen in the business, custom build on the original machinery even involving some of the original people. It's even relic'd to make it authentic"(I'm not saying it is authentic), is a good opening for your guitars history? :)

In my case add, Peter, a guy i know buys a cs relic and play it for 1 or 2 years and sell it to get a Rick, a very good friend of mine buys it from the store at a 'friends price' because he is sure i will get crazy over it(this makes it very precious to me), which i do and buy it for the same amount as he payed. It's been with me now for half a year, during which i've managed to make two large scratches on the back of the guitar because of a zipper  I don't see why the relic is ruining my story? or having any effect on the story at all? Not thats is an interesting story at all but see it as an example
