How did the name Grease Bucket in reference to the modified tone control on some Fender guitars and Basses come about? Why do they call it a Grease Bucket?
Any ideas?

A dumb guess is that the metal film ones look like buckets and are filled with a form of grease

How the circuit got it's trademarked name is anyone's guess as it is not documented. Sounds like someone in marketing might have received an email in 2004 that went something like, "For some 2005 models we're going to try a different band pass filter that rolls off highs without boosting the lows and we need a name for it. You did great with the Highway One name so we're giving this to you. Make it something catchy that 16 year olds will like. Get back to me..."

The reason I say that is because with a name like Greasebucket you'd expect it to be all nasty and grungy but it is actually the opposite. But otherwise it is just a guess.

What isn't a guess is how it looks similar to the 1999 G&L ASAT tone control block diagram here: http://www.glguitars.com/schematics/ASAT_schematic_blockdiagram.pdf But the values are different.
