Like Screamin Armadillo when I feel the desire for a new guitar I make myself wait several months and in all cases the impulse passes.

That passing impulse has saved me a considerable amount of money over the last few years!

New or different guitars will not make me a better player...

Shh! Don't let the Lady Armadillo hear you say that!

I have sold guitars and I have always regretted it later. The first one I sold (to cover two house payments in 1977) was my 1971 Tele Custom I ordered brand new when I got back from Vietnam. I sold two more in 1999 when I had a weak moment and I just recently sold my mint 1995 (Fender Vista Series) Venus 12-string.

Bye-bye, Venus.

Then, for half the money I got for the Venus, I picked up another Fender that I'd been thinking about for months - a Korean-made Toronado GT with Seyour-Duncan Pearly Gates and reverse wound Vintage '59 pickups. All in all, a good swap for me as I play the Toronado a LOT more than I ever did the Venus.

I have almost always used gig money to buy my guitars, amps and other gear. In the 90s, in Minnesota, I played out almost every weekend of the year and most weekends were Fri-Sat or Thur-Fri-Sat. I made a lot more money playing in the boonies back then than I ever make playing here in the Big City now.

I still keep the gig money I make now (in cash) in my sock drawer, ready for a purchase - if I can keep my wife from "borrowing" a $20 or a $50 now and then. She always says she'll pay me back, but she never does. :x

In a typical week's worth of evening practice, I will generally play at least a dozen different guitars through a half dozen different amps. Some weekends I'll play every guitar hanging on the walls of the Music Room - there are 17 hanging there at all times. I usually swap the guitars on the walls every other month or so. I never get tired of my guitars.

I am focusing on playing bass. I only have 2 basses, so will be adding probably at least 1 more eventually.

However, I started with guitars, and I'm down to 4 (2 Am Strats, Gibson Les Paul, Taylor T5). Have sold a couple of acoustics (dreadnoughts) that I simply wasn't ever going to play, but am considering getting a Baby Taylor. I also sold my first electric guitar (Fender Starcaster, HSS), and I do regret selling it, as now I will have to evenually replace it with a more expensive HSS. :D And then, of course I'll need a tele ...

I'm not playing my guitars, and when I consider selling the only one I'd consider selling (one of the Strats), I know I wouldn't get the $$ that I would want, so I might as well keep it.
