Gibson's been wanting to move offshore for years. They regretted not following Fender's approach when they saw that buyers accepted Japanese, Mexican, Korean, etc "Fenders" and gave Fender a bigger profit margin, and they regretted painting themselves into a corner by having repeatedly said that Gibson guitars would always be USA only.

First they tested the waters a few years ago by floating the rumors that their new Epi plant in China was also building necks for the lower-end USA Gibsons. They were hoping for an "eh, who cares, every company does that -- they should go ahead and start a full Gibson-branded import line like the MIM's and MIJ's so we could have the open-book headstock on affordable Gibsons" response. Then they could go ahead and actually start making Gibsons in China. But the internet outrage convinced them that Gibson fans would feel betrayed and angry if they voluntarily moved offshore.

So they're looking for a way to be "forced" to move offshore, so that "the gov't" is the demon and they're a "proud American company" just doing what they have to do to survive. It's likely Henry J intentionally ordered his wood buyers to deal with a shady importer and then tipped off the DOJ himself. The media will sell the idea that it's "patriotic" to buy Chinese Gibsons to support the "underdog USA company" as it "battles the oppressive gov't".

Looks like you were right on the "money" with that earlier post.
Here's a news article I saw today;

Do you want to "grow" jobs???

How about start by getting rid of the government regulations, taxes and paperwork that businesses must contend with.

SMALLER government - instead of the huge government that this administration wants, and DEMANDS - at our expense!!

Businesses are in "business" to make money - not lose money. So, to simplify, they leave places that restrict them and go to places that allow them to prosper. (over simplification, yes - but to make it understandable for some)

So ... create an environment that is good for business ... they will be here to give jobs to those that want to work. (and are WILLING to actually WORK)

Put another way ..... If ALL of us will come together to make this country work (and quit listening to the leftist propaganda) .... IT WILL!! And, yes, ... first we NEED a "house cleaning" in DC ... :wink:

Imagine that! Patriotic to buy a guitar made overseas! Talk about spin. Yet I agree, that´s how twisted things are nowadays. But I have to disagree on the craftmanship issue, the only location that could equal American-made guitars would be Germany. I think it is just fine that companies offer a wide scale of products, as there are all kinds of expectations out there when purchasing a guitar. But I did not go through the spectrum in vane! I payed for a high salary, top staff when I got my Custom Shop, and it shows, inside out. My point is, let economics follow its course, what YOU can do is to buy American-made and do so proudly! You are getting the very best! Stand up my American Friends! -Mike, writing from Mexico.

Maybe, you might be right. I didn't think that Gibson was big enough to play crooks and robbers with the big boys though. It seems more like the continuing process of destroying American companies, whoever might be in cahoots. It wouldn't really surprise me if the CEO was an accessory.

Watch for the federal brown-shirts to seize Gibson outright ala Chrysler and GM then offer Henry the position of "guitar czar" within the administration and unionize what remains of the workforce in Nashville. Perhaps they'll even find a "foreign partner" to merge with -- say, Cort or Jay Turser. If this doesn't scare the HELL out of the sheeple in this country, I don't know what will.

:evil:

(gee, I've always wanted a "Government Les Paul"......)

I don,t think Gibson is involved. Their problem is Non Union, and donating to the Republican and not the Dem,s.
