So far in the Columbia, MD area it has just been like a heavy rain all day. If I wasn't told it was a 'caine, I would just be wondering why it is raining so much today.

Sunday 10:48 am. It's all over 'cept the shouting. (wonder where that comes from) While not the degree of destruction and mayhem that the media portrayed in the endless "If this happens, then.............." the metro NYC area pretty much dodged a bullet.
The outbound Linclon Tunnel is closed due to flooding, most of the bridges were closed over night because of wind gusts over 60 mph,the mass transit system is still closed and sofar I haven't heard any reports of flying glass and debris from skyscrapers.
The older communities on Long Island have the usual power outages due to falling trees and branches taking out utility poles and power lines. They are also the ones with the flooded basements and high water stories. Life at the shore comes with these risks.

This storm seems to have hit hardest where no one (in the media) was focused.. inland flood plains and drainage's..
The infrastructure caved in when the backside of the storm turned into a major rainmaker and flooded out suburban utilities.
3.3 million folks without power today.. and worst of all, falling trees and power lines took 41 lives in the process.. that is the true tragedy of Irene.

A tree got completely uprooted in my yard and almost hit my neighbors' houses, it also managed to knock out power for the neighborhood. Big tree limbs were falling out of the other trees all day, one of them seems to have snapped about two thirds of the way up. Just got power back earlier.

Hope everybody here made it through without harm.

It looks like that the leftovers of Irene won't be knocking on my door. More often than not leftovers hurricane that go up the eastcoast of North-America get gaught in the Gufl-Stream and becomes severe storm on Iceland's West and South coast with winds from 20-40 m/s (around 45-90 MPH). Pheeww.

I am sad to hear that 41 lives where lost in the storm. :(
