I've had contact with Doc. Instead of flying back to NY tomorrow night,
he's holding off a few more days.

I had toyed with the idea of flying to Connecticut to avoid Irene. As it turns out, it was a non-event here. I passed along hurricane survival tips to my family and friends now directly in the path.

A Cat 2 or 3 storm shouldn't be taken lightly. Prepare and stay safe!

The NY+NJ mayors have been all over the local media outlining how mass transit will be halted by 4 pm tomorrow. Low lying areas are being evacuated, Atlantic City's casinos are closing at noon tomorrow (That NEVER happens). The term I here alot is "Storm of the century". Hope they are wrong but the radio just reported that Doc's part of the globe could be taking wind gusts of 100 mph.

Interesting times indeed,
John.E

Storm of the century....I doubt...That is panicking people for no constructive reason. That being said, any tropical storm downgraded from hurricane status which predictions say it will be by the time it passes over us in CT... Is not to be taken lightly. I used to live on Block Island and over 30+ years have experienced my share's of Hurricane's, Tropical Storms, Nor' Easter's and Blizzard's. None of which are to be dismissed however, I find 95% of the reporting misleading and downright Ass-N-Nine.
Here is why I think this way. For those on coastal ( up to 10 mile's inland ) and especially low lying or at/close to mean high tide marks. Those homeowner's/ residents need to have accurate intelligent predictions, they have to have a worse case scenario based on actual data, not apocalyptic nonsense based on uneducated assumptions.

It is a Cat III Hurricane and as it travels up the shoreline of the East Coast, it will draw heavy moisture from the ocean and dump it on land. By that I really do mean dump it, there will be a lot of rain and quite a bit of flooding so if you have anything in your basement that is prone to getting wet, I would suggest elevating these items at the very least.
Also if it stays with it's predicted path, Irene will weaken to a tropical storm as it moves up the coast since it seems from predictions that the eye will be inland.
Dependent on what the storm does is what weather patterns are inland West of the East Coast. A big cold front would be nice thus it would push Irene back out into the Atlantic.
Question here is from where to where and how far East would it go...?

So I cannot predict any more than any one else what will definitely happen in the NorthEast, but I do know that stupidity will govern some people and they will comport themselve's appropriately. So to other's I say pick up anything in your yard that is easily picked up by 35 to 50 mph+ wind, move your car from under tree branche's that may break and fall. If you have a garage leave the car inside, even a siding shingle flying about in 50 MPH wind will go thru a window or put a real nice dent in your prized ride. Common sense goes a long way in storm situations, also don't put the cat out, it will run away seeking shelter, same with the dog, put a leash on the dog if it has to go out. The last thing you want to do during a tropical storm is to be chasing your cat or dog around the neighborhood and then risk getting hurt by not paying attention.

BTW... I do recall Hurricane Gloria back in the 80's, a lot of people actually 99% on Block Island emerged to find their 15 to 46+ sailboats high and dry on land, some 200+ yards, over the rocks from where they were moored.
So I do not dismiss this storm, I do treat it with respect and will prepare accordingly not with panic and " Oh MY GOd... THe SKy is Falling... The End Is Near.....!!!! type of running around like a chicken with no head.

THen again once ashore it may just rush up inland into the North like many have before.

To all be safe and think twice about what you are doing.
That way we can all make it to Jam night on Tuesday....

You can listen to the "hurricane feed" on (free) 5-0 radio-police scanner-lite app.

Seems that traffic is the biggest problem right now with people
rushing to get outta town after a day at the beach.

I lived through Ivan and Dennis within a nine month period while stationed near Pensacola Florida. Ivan was a strong Cat 3 and did unspeakable damage from Destin to Pensacola...these storms are NEVER to be taken lightly. If you are in the path of Irene, GET OUT NOW!

If you are in doubt of what these storms can do, check out this link...these photos were taken about two miles from where I lived...

Take care and stay safe.

I am in Maryland and very, very confused about all the reports I am hearing.

I am hearing maybe Cat 1 - tropical storm from Weather Channel by the time it hits my state. While the popular media is acting like it is bedtime for democracy.

If the media is hyping this storm, they are really doing a disservice to the people of the East Coast. Kinda makes me mad. And scared that I might be caught totally off guard without my emergency hurricane kit if it does amp up to Cat 5.

I hope it dwindles to nothing or blows out to sea. I especially hope it does so just to discredit the media.

I wish we could just get some straight answers. I haven't seen any really helpful reports about where shelters are in my area, and escape routes in case my house gets blown to smithereens.

I am hoping to get to my local Indian Buffet before it hits in the afternoon. I hope we don't lose power for days on end.

Everyone stay safe!

We packed up the lawn chairs, closed the fire pit, bungeed close the umbrella getting ready here in Maryland. I am worried about the front lawn because we just had to get a new water service put in and after it was done I put down 1,000lbs of top soil and grass seed. It's just starting to grow so I hope it don't wash out, the other day we received about 2" of rain in a few hours that caused me to do some repair work on it do to settling.
I do know one thing you could not buy a D size battery in any store in Maryland today and the bottled water shelves were empty. People should remember there is such a thing as candles and you should always keep some D and AA batteries in the house. I always keep these at home along with plenty of ammo

I've lived here in CT all my life, was 7 months old during the Flood of '55, Hurricane Diana in the early 60's, Blizzard/Storm Larry in '78, Hurricane Gloria in '85, numerous major snowstorms, etc., and now this. Well, lot's of food, water, beer, and tunes, all set!
