So I'm a huge Prine fan, once I started playing acoustic I got turned on to him by a work buddy and listened to him ever since.

Last Sat I got to see him for the 2nd time in concert at the Big Top Chautauqua in Bayfield WI. He's aged alot in the last couple years and he was having some vocal issues but he hasn't lost his stage personality in any way. He is still down to earth, personable, and humorous.

He's built an entire career out of only a few chords and a capo, and a picking style that's disntinct. His lyrics are descriptive and can either be straight out funny or cynical. His sonce "common sense" for example, though written in 1976, is just as accurate today. With the great line in the chorus, "it don't make no sense, that common sense, don't make sense anymore."

Anyway, I know he doesn't play Fender but just wondering if any of the other guitarists on here enjoy him at all.

One of my favorites is "Paradise" out in west Kentucky. Muhlenberg County is home to a lot of music. Everly Brothers, Merle Travis, his friend Mose Rager (also Chet Adkins' friend), thumbpicking style guitar playing learned from a man named Arnold Shultz of Ohio County. (I looked him up on wiki and it said he also taught Bill Monroe in Ohio County, Ky.) A lot of roots music around there and John Prine is a favorite around there.

I thought I might add that I worked at Paradise the last eight years of my illustrious career. I worked for a man who took lessons from Mose Rager and had a lot of stories. In fact, I started my guitar playing while there. All that rubbed off on me, and now I'm a nose picker, three chord warbler. For many years the Everly Bros held a concert every summer in Central City, Ky., and John Prine was always there. That's all I got. :)

He had a great story the other night. He said his two sons are both guitarists that he said "can play circles around me." But they were sitting around playing acoustics and they asked him to show them something.

He said I told them "I'm not lazy but I just found these 4 or 5 chords were all I really needed."

What I don't get is why he still uses that old fashion style capo with the strap that you have to adjust and screw with every time you put it on or move it. There's so many newer reliable types that clamp on securely much easier. But I suppose it's the same reason that Charlie Watts has used the same small Gretsch kit since time began, why mess with what works right? :D

John Prine is a songwriting genius, his songs can be hilarious like in "Dear Abby" or hard hitting" ...There's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes..".I've never seen him live when he played here but I hear that it was one of the best concerts to ever come here.

Dear Abby, Dear Abby...
Well I never thought
That me and my girlfriend would ever get caught
We were sitting in the back seat just shooting the breeze
With her hair up in curlers and her pants to her knees
Signed Just Married

I loved that last verse it always got a laugh when I played it. John Prine is a great storyteller and I love his music. We used to sit around the dorm room in college killing brain cells with John Prine and Jerry Jeff Walker taking turns on the stereo...Wish I had some of them back...brains cells that is. :D

Definitely worth catching if you can, the dude is 65+, he played for 2 1/2 hours without ever taking a break. He sent his guitarist and bassist off and played for about 1/2 hr - 45 mins by himself too.

"Hole in Daddy's arm..." definitely some meaningful lyrics. He's got so many like that it's hard to pick some out. My absolute favorite is "Souvenirs", "it took me years to get those souvenirs, and I don't know how they slipped away from me", "broken hearts and dirty windows, make life difficult to see."
