Today I finished my first lesson book. (happiness)
It usually takes around a year and a half and I finished it in a year and 1 week. :D
On to my new book.....intro to music theory :? With no tab, this book is going to be a challenge, an adventure, and something that will make me an overall better musician.
I'm pumped! Learning to read music may help in my desire to play piano as well :D
Watch out world, here I come

Good stuff. I'm sure the results will speak for themselves if you stay dedicated.

Reading standard notation and having even a basic understanding of music theory will put you ahead of at least 90% of the guitarists out there. FEW and I mean FEW of the people I have gigged with can read treble clef, let alone bass clef or drum notation. It is different in studio or orchestra gigs though, as you won't get hired if you can't read the charts or successfully can fake it as many percussionists often have done!

A songwriter and tremendous "by ear" keyboard player I know can come up with some amazing music, but they can't chart any of it because they don't read music! So they have to pay someone to transcribe it into standard notation for them! Many artists and even songwriters work that way. They can't read a lick of music but are amazing players or writers, so someone has to transcribe the music to notation for them for publishing. I can read music but my sight reading skills are very rusty. In other words I have to look at it and practice it in advance now because frankly I don't use standard notation that much as practically everyone I play with in a live setting does not read music. My last project with sheet music was over a year ago. There were about 80 pages of it and about 27 pieces. It kicked my tail, but I got through it. It was good for me.

TAB is fun and a way to get you interested in music because it gets you playing songs quickly, but is little use to a successful studio cat or orchestra player. Not knowing how to read standard notation or basic theory is a surefire way to remain a wannabe when it comes to getting good paying studio or orchestra gigs.

It is about as rare to find a horn player or keyboardist who doesn't read standard notation as it is to find a guitarist who does! So keep it up and know that being able to read music will put you ahead of most other players and long term will open up a multitude of opportunities other guitarists just can't handle.

Thanks Everybody!
brotherdave- Isn't that the truth? I really want to be in Jazz Band in high school and I feel like that could help. I also think sometimes that if I don't hit it big with my plans to play in the same band as Nick Simmons and Evan Stanley (formally called HUG) then I can fall back on so many opportunities as you said! I sometimes look at the back of the SNL band and see that guitar player and I think that would be a really cool gig.

Lots of luck with it fenderflamestrat, being able to read notation will open up all kinds of doors for you-once you get good enough at it you'll have no problem getting studio work where sight reading is a prerequisite.
