I was talking about changing keys in the middle of a song in another thread and I got some help but I am still confused :?
I am doing a Beatles Fingerpicking medley and want to have one or two songs in it that are in a different key as the rest but I don't know how to smoothly change keys in the middle of the medley. I forgot who but they said something about "walking up" to the new key but I'm not quite sure what they meant. If my song arrangement went like this:

Blackbird - G Major
KEY CHANGE
All You Need is Love -C Major
Something
In My Life
Imagine
Let It Be
A Day in the Life

KEY CHANGE
Yesterday - G Major

How might the key changes go? That lineup might not be the same when it's all said and done but it's a rough guideline.
Thanks in advance!!

By "walking up" to a key change, I assume the writer was referring to going through a passing chord or a few of them, to reach the new key. Often this will be a chromatic sequence. This 'prepares' the listeners ear to expect the new key, rather than suddenly having it imposed on them. It can be a useful tool - well worth some experimentation. Listen to the big medley on side 2 of the truly wonderful Abbey Road to hear it done well.

In your case, think about throwing in an extra bar at the end of Blackbird, where you go to a quick Bb then a B, then on to C. and then when you're ready to move back to G at the end of A Day in the Life (adventurous song choice - heard jeff Beck's version?), throw in a quick bar of F to F# before going to G for your last number.

Good luck friend..

You could end 'Blackbird' as "fly...into the night..." then walk up
with G / A/ B / C then do your songs in C.

Then after "A Day in the Life" you could go back to the
release and slowly (retard) drop down like G / F#m / Em / D / G then do 'Yesterday'.

Good luck and cool medley!

Thanks guys! I understand a whole lot more now!

adey- I have heard Jeff Beck's version, it is a masterpiece. You could tell he is really feeling the music and it looks as if it has a deeper meaning to him. And they way he just controls that guitar and the amount of sustain is incredible as well.
Is it adventurous song selection? Yes I think so as it is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Like I said earlier, it just is a masterpiece. Perfection on all levels. I figure that I want to be able to take this my own way and show that it is special to me as well. The part that will be somewhat hard will be cutting it down for the medley.

Miami Mike- I really like you idea! I think this could be an incredible medley if I pull it off. I have yet to see anything like it so if I do it will be awesome.
