Do you suppose the earth was dancing in honor of Tim Drake's B-day?

We couldn't feel it here in So Cal but having been through many, and following them pretty closely, it must have been quite a shock to all of you. We get a 5+ about once a year and kind of enjoy them but always hoping it's not the big one.

A couple points just for information, quakes have two types of waves. A higher frequency P wave that travels faster that you feel first, like a vertical vibration. Then comes the S wave that has the latteral motion and energy that swings and sways things. The USGS uses the time difference between the two types of waves to determine the location of the epicenter. If you can feel the P waves you can bet your pretty close to the epicenter and the lateral movement will be pretty good. If you just feel the rolling and the movement is rolling and slow, you can bet it was pretty far away but of substantial size.

We here have had higher earthquake standards for our buildings and most are not that old. Most will survive a moderate to substantial quake. This gives us, out here, a false sense of security so we generally react lightly while feeling Mother Nature's energy and waiting for the quake to stop. You folks back east have houses and buildings that are centuries older and with little thought to earthquakes since they are so rare. Add that to not having any quakes to speak of and I can totally understand the heightened anxiety and fear.

Back in the 80’s we had many many quakes here and I got involved with a group of people who watched things like well water levels and clarity, oil well pressures, sun spots and solar energy, animal behavior, ocean tides and moon phase, and missing dogs and cats in the papers. Believe it or not the most consistent precursor was the missing dogs and cats in the paper.

Here is a link to a USGS site that you can check out what’s going on. Most quakes show up on the maps within about 5 minutes. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqscanv/

I hope everything is alright out there and none of you had any damage or loss.

FWIW -- The Pacific Coast is a subduction zone and quite fractured. This means that earthquakes don't transmit efficiently over distance in most cases.

In the Mid-west and East Coast the plate is quite solid and well connected and the energy transmits quite efficiently though the ground so it's felt quite a distance away.

At least that's how I remember it from my San Francisco Earthquake classes.

Just like sustain. :)

that's funny! Refried beans can do that to me, but I haven't caused an earthquake yet!

BREAKING NEWS: President Obama has just confirmed that the DC earthquake occurred on a rare and obscure fault-line, apparently known as "Bush's Fault". Obama also announced that the Secret Service and Maxine Waters continues an investigation of the quake's suspicious ties to the Tea Party. Conservatives however have proven that it was caused by the founding fathers rolling over in their graves ...

Maybe someone cut down to many endangered (EBONY) Trees and the Earth slipped a Click or two.  The last one we had here(The Nisqually Quake) was 6.+? a fue years back and it literally knocked me off my feet. Some have said in my case, that was long overdue. Some very well informed scientists believe that the North American Continent is going into a more seismically active time and that it is past time for some serious Retrofitting to upgrade buildings and other structures to withstand a 6/7+ event. Around here they say a 9+ is possible. I hope not.
