I have a Tascam GT-R1 and I like it A LOT. I use it with my bass, primarily for practicing (bass plugged into recorder, listening through headphones), and for taking my music to lessons.

However, the guitar jack has become unreliable. I like the GT-R1 well enough that I’m considering buying another one. Before I do that, though, I thought I’d get some opinions about handheld recorders.

Purpose:
Practice
Recording my playing with a song (overdubbing)
Recording lessons (nothing at a professional level)

My needs (some of these are pretty basic):
Has to work well with a bass
Change pitch
Change speed
Looping (I’d like to be able to set & save a loop for each song vs just setting a loop that is in effect only for one song, or during current song)
Built-in tuner
Being able to organize files into folders
Uses interchangeable memory cards (SDHC)
Can connect to computer to transfer music to & from
Overdubbing (so I can record myself playing over a track, to see how well I’m doing)
Part cancelling (I think the guitar cancel on the GT-R1 sucks),
Cancelling selected channel (left, right)
Line out for headphones, or to amp
Line in
Built in mic
Guitar jack
Drum tracks (including metronome with variety of settings)
Can run off of AC power as well as battery
Other features I haven’t thought of, to support practicing :)

I would like to be able to load my own effects to the unit, but this is a wish list feature. GT-R1 comes with a bunch of effects and amp settings, but I don’t think I can do anything other than change the settings for the preloaded effects/amp options – i.e. mix & match effects.

Thanks in advance for your opinions. And while I promise to read them, I reserve all rights to ignore them. :D

I have the 1st generation CD-GT1 and I still use it to learn songs/riffs http://tascam.com/product/cd-gt1/

You should really take a look at the BOSS BR-80 http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=1167&ParentId=72. I have a BR-800 and love it, the BR-80 has the same features but in a smaller compact size.

It doesn't have left or right channel cancelling, but if youi import a track in stereo to one of the paired stereo tracks, than you can use the faders to lower the track volume.

Funny -- I had left my Musician's Friend catalog open to that advertisement. Hmm. Will have to consider.

THANKS!
