I have been reading this forum daily for the better part of a year, but I rarely post (in fact I've been welcomed many times, which I enjoy because it shows that this is a friendly bunch). However, the recent surge in spam has annoyed me enough to post a topic just to ask why. I understand that somebody trying to sell a guitar could be naive enough to post here (against the rules) but DVD's.?

Do they really think I'm going to go from reading about someone's new guitar/pick-ups/musical musing etc to...hey I'd like buy 50 dvd's? I don't think so.

I will purposely avoid whatever is being are hawking 'cuz they are screwing with something I really enjoy and if I could I would reach through my computer and choke them!

A lot of the spam on here is more than just spam. If you click the links in most of the spam that gets posted here it will lead to a site that my computer blocks due to "A Threat was detected on this site". So Don't Click the Links in these Posts, they're probably phishing, and not really advertising; just trying to get some info so they can infect your computer with spyware, viruses etc...
I too have noticed that it has happened more recently, and hopefully the new upgrades which Brad says were partially security upgrades, will at least curb it a bit.

They're mostly just bots that post on forums with pre-written messages or something to that effect.

Any popular or shall we say, "authoritative" forum on a given subject will increasingly attract in-kind spam traffic. It's just the nature of the beast for even if the poster does get bounced and banned, if even one sale was realized, they have accomplished their goal and hopefully, the one customer will tell many more in spite of the spammer's inherent underhandedness. Obviously, these types show a basic deceitfulness on how they conduct business which of course, directly says something about their character in general.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

There are some people who would go to great effort to make one dishonest dime, rather than put that same effort in making an honest one.

Welcome to the Forum, BTW.

This is so true for if they were an honorable business, spamming would be the furthest thing from their marketing strategy.

Of course, +1 on the welcome!

I can't see how these people fail to realize that spamming has opposite the desired effect and turns people from the product/service that they are providing.Don't they realize that by now red flags go up whenever people see spam?

Right now some MSN bot is "browsing" the forums. It's usually the Google.bot I see here the most.

Can a [bot] register, wouldn't that take a real person? The bot may browse the forum, but so what? But, what I want to say is, don't respond to these spam posts, just report them and leave the post to die or be removed. If anyone responds, the thread is kept closer to the top for more to see, and of course, more will respond then too, keeping it alive.

HELLO- can I interest you in a 1945 Model 186 Dioscillator? This is only one of two known to be in existance. Hurry into Vance Electronics and Sub-Harmonic Fracture Co., Stanten, NY for a free trial. I can not guarentee you won't tell the chicken jokes though. This spam brought to you by the NICP where people meet to eat. 8)

I did not know about the "bot" thing. I'll have to look that up.

I guess I can see that popular spots are likely to be a target for this garbage. I know I can ignore/not click on the topic, but it is like the trash that some jerks thow out on the highway; I can't help but see it and it irritates me everytime.
