Dude, no.
KISS plays on their albums. With the exception of Eddie and Alex Van Halen who are rumored to have played on the Love Gun track. That solo sounds like Eddie to me too.

Sorry-- I just read it not long ago-- I think maybe in Sammy Hagers book where he talks about using the same guy on some of his tunes. I'm sure that's not the only time I've read that. I think the one Bruce guy did studio tracks before he was even in the band. I don't think it's not known that Kiss used studio musicians. I read the Van Halen book and there is no mention of them playing with Kiss. Gene Simmons helped Van Halen at the start of thier career by signing them up with a production company or something.

Yes, Gene produced their startup album. I have the vinyl and it lists his name on the back :D

I've read (on the reliable internet) that Gene used the Van Halen brothers in the studio to record demos for the Love Gun album. The solo on the track Love Gun was Eddie's solo, re-recorded note for note by Ace.

I believe in that case you are correct, VH brothers did some demo work but the Love Gun solo was redone by Ace on the actual track.

There are some cases where studio musicans do have unnamed appearances on their albums, one case specifically is on Destroyer. I believe Dick Wagner from Alice Cooper's band played on Sweet Pain and Flaming Youth. According to Bob Ezrin, producer, they needed to finish the track and Ace was busy "partying and playing cards" so they put Wanger's parts on the album and Ace wasn't told about it until he heard them on the official release. Kind of a crappy way to handle it but that was Gene/Paul's taskmaster way of telling him to be there when needed.

Ace and Peter wanted to party like rockstars and Gene/Paul are businessmen that play rock n roll. That's the kind of difference in attitudes that alot of their disagreements were based on.

And another thing they're known to do is members swap instruments on songs, Gene might play rythm and Paul might play the bass line.

I just saw this really cool article. It does hold up the belief of studio musicians on some tracks.
I already knew most of this but I still found it cool!

i always liked kiss but never loved them enough to become a kiss army member. when i was younger i didn't think much of them - didn't really love or hate them. I started listening to their stuff on vinyl a few years ago and kinda got into them. The early stuff is really good in my opinion. Detroit rock city remains one of my favorite songs.
I think they suffered from over saturation in the market with all the junk they were selling and that overshadowed all they had accomplished. As many have said before me, if they can make money there were going to. so you get Kiss coffins and Kiss lunch boxes.

OK...Ace Frehley....I got some bad stuff to report about the guy. I had always heard stories about how in their Hayday, Kiss would hire studio guitarists to come in and do his tracks for him. I never actually believed this until I met a recording engineer that I got to know quite well who told me that he had actually seen some pretty great guitar players show up at the studio during their sessions and step over Aces lifeless drunken body on the floor to do his work for him. This person would have never told just anyone this information but he and I had gotten pretty chummy thorugh hanging out and doing a bunch of studio stuff together and I do not believe he was making this up. NOW!!!
I lived in Connecticut for several years. I would hang out at Daddy's Junky Music, LaSalle Music, and several of the other local stores in the area. One day I was hanging out with Jimi Bell in the store he worked at at that time (the name of the store slips my mind) but it was around 1988 or 9. And Ace (who lived in the neighborhood at the time) wandered into the store making crazy demands for free guitars, amps, and what have you. The guy was pretty drunk. He sat down at a bench and literally hacked his way through some crazy little guitar riff. I am very sorry but the guy was just appalling. Whatever childhood respect I had for him was just gone. He eventually was talked into leaving the store. Needless to say...that little episode was talked about for a long time at the store.
So that is my experience with Ace Frehley. I use to love "Cold Gin" and I keep it on my Ipod but when it comes up...I just go to the next song remembering back to that day.
I am sorry to speak ill of him but I was there and saw what I saw..................

That is pretty sad. Then again, I wouldn't doubt Ace of doing that either. My question is, did you make him drive home while that severely intoxicated? Just a thought
Ace can get free guitars if he wants so in his drunken state he must've thought he was at Gibson
Do the studio musicians get any credit anywhere for their work?
Also, Mark William, I think you would like some of Tommy Thayer's work on Sonic Boom. That is a great album and Tommy really breaks out in it. I can't wait for the next!

When you do studio work, some people or groups pay you up front and then you sign away residuals. Many well known acts do this to simplify credits and keep more profits in the end. Or you sign a contract to be on the copyrights to collect royalties. I have known many obsure musicians who have retired from music (so to speak) that made a great living off of doing this.

OH...and I was just a casual observer of the whole Ace Frehley ordeal. As to who drove the guy home...I couldn't tell ya. If I remember correctly...he didn't come into the place alone. So maybe one of his drunken buddies drove him home. <-----was a joke.
