Have to get in on this thread...
I grew up on Ace and Kiss. Ace's stuff was - and still is - fantastic. He has a way of combining flash with melody that, as they say, many have imitated but none have duplicated. He also has come up with some pretty unique riffs in his songs - chord structures and melodic ideas that are just slightly different from what most people would come up with. Unfortunately, the latter part of his career has been spotty, at best. I truly hope he has pulled it together.
As far as why Kiss remains popular...you can speculate, but there is one thing I will say...go see them live, and those songs, the ones that are often blasted as being too simple, sound absolutely awesome thundering through a venue. Combine the quality of the songs with the concept of the four iconic images, and you've got something that never ceases to be fun and exciting.
Just my opinion.

Well said Sunburst, never not had fun at a KISS show. The whole idea of it was to be outlandish and fun, and they managed that very well.

I love KISS. One of my first memories is Ace's laugh in 'KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park', the t.v. special they did in '78.

One of my all-time favorite tracks is the Alive II version of "King of the Night Time World". They coulda left Side IV off though IMO.

I think "Love Theme From KISS" proves how good they really are.

I'm still afraid of Gene Simmons.

Love how they used the lyrics Rip and Destroy instead of Hotter than Hell!
I taped this off tv years ago. Very Cheesy...love it!

I love the guitar work in Let Me Go, Rock and Roll. Simple but tasty!

The title of this speaks for itself, "Ace Frehley Best Laugh." This was from the Tomorrow Show, Halloween '79 with Tom Snyder. I can remember watching this interview in the basement on a black and white tv and recording it on my cassette player so I could listen to it. Technology has come a long way since than.

Anyway, here's Ace....

saw Kiss 3 times late 70's early 80's. Friend of mine has a post card Gene Simmons wrote to him in 78 or 79. They're lucky. They hit on an idea and it payed off.

There is no comparing Kiss with the Beatles in any way shape or form on planet Earth. Maybe on planet Bizarro!

Showmanship on a one to ten = 10 Musicianship on a one to ten =3

Okay let it rip !!!!!!!!!!!!!! And please don't go all intellectual on me about Kiss! Just say F off or whatever- 8)

I'd say Ace does what he does (70s style blues rock, heavy use of the minor pentatonic scale, monster riffs and a healthy dose of overdrive and vibrato) and he does it well!

Not the most groundbraking musician who ever lived, but certainly a top-flight rock guitarist and an excellent showman.

Ace actually just played here in Buffalo last week. I didn't see the show but a friend of mine who went said it was great.

From what I have read and heard Kiss has pretty much always used studio musicians on thier albums.

Ace... Um, I guess I could summarize him with a smilie:

Sorry KISS fans, I was just never really into the whole Kiss Army thing. They were a good band, but they were all flash and no substance. Like someone posted before. Showmanship = 10. Musicianship = 3.

Hey, everybody's got opinions, that's what makes the world go round ya know. KISS never set out to impress critics, it's all about music that's fun and a great show.

But musicianship on a 3 is low, considering the classic riffs and impact on rock in general even KISS-haters gotta realize their place as an influential group.

I am not a Kiss hater. In 78 and early eighties Kiss's musicianship was that of an upper grade bar band. Singing and everything---- Thier look is what everyone freaked out over- that kind of thing in the minds of fans propelled them to God like worship status thus allowing them to gain status from thier look and some just decent music.
I watched them play 3 times close up. I watched Genes bass technique and Peter Criss' drum technique especially close. I never got caught up in the Kiss trinket buying and Army. They do not completely blow as musicians. And I would say they did get better as they went along. But in those early days even they would probubly admit they were pretty new to the whole thing. I'll stick by my 10-3 scale.

So do your Kiss thing- I don't mind it. Just because someone says things other than the most positive loving thing about Kiss does not mean they are haters. Keep that in mind with other things too-- you don't want to be a "hater" hater do you?

It's all good stroker, I thought 3 was low is all, but it's all opinions.

I see it as anyone that can write hit songs and maintain some popularity is at least a 5, I mean I am NOT a fan of Garth Brooks or Madonna but they took the hits and stuck it out long enough to earn huge fame so they deserve my respect just for that. Maybe that makes sense. And your opinion was tactful and well supported so what's to hate?

No hating here, enough of that elsewhere 8)

Dude, no.
KISS plays on their albums. With the exception of Eddie and Alex Van Halen who are rumored to have played on the Love Gun track. That solo sounds like Eddie to me too.
