I'm working on my blues soloing and am trying to listen to more blues.

If you guys were to make a Blues 101 playlist, or even like a best-of the blues, what would you put on it? I'm looking forward to some serious guitar playing.

Thanx, even the ones where the guys are just singin or blowin harp, try and transcribe their voice to guitar, thats really all guitar is, just another form of singing. And remember real blues is a man, all alone, thinking about the world, how it didnt turn out the way he wanted, and thinking of the woman he once was with...

Here's a few I'd have to go with.

Johnny Winter "Life is hard"
Boz Skaggs "Ask me bout nothing but the blues"
Peter Green "Need your love so bad"
Duane Allman "Loan me a dime"
Joe Bonamassa "Sloe Gin"

It all depends on what kind of blues you want to play. Learn to play what you guitar heros listened to. John Lee Hooker, Howlen Wolf, Albert King, Lightin Hopkins, Sonny Boy Williams. Theres many go back in time its the old stuff that will give you inspiration. Oh and Elmore James.

Joe Bonamassa, Sloe Gin, Blues Deluxe, If Heartaches Were Nickels
BB King, Sweet Sixteen, The Thrill is Gone
Stevie Ray Vaughan, Texas Flood
Kenny Wayne Shepherd, While We Cry
Walter Trout, Satisfied

That's just a short list of some of my favorites. There are many more out there that are great.

Yeah, I'm not the biggest SRV fan, but I do love that song, and it's very relevant to the Texas blues type of sound.

Educate yourself on the different styles of blues. There are many, and most people who haven't really listened to blues yet have no idea the depth that blues actually has. I know I didn't. :)

Listen to the originals, the old acoustic blues artists to get an idea about where electric blues originated.
For Delta blues try:
Son House
Charlie Patton
Robert Johnson

And for the Texas side of acoustic blues listen to:
Blind Willie Johnson
Blind Lemon Jefferson
Lightnin' Hopkins (you'd be surprised by how much of SRV you can hear in Lightnin' Hopkins)
Mance Lipscomb
Lil Son Jackson

A lot of the Chicago blues artists began their career in the south, which is why you can hear such a close connection between people like Muddy Waters and the acoustic delta blues style. For chicago blues listen to:
Muddy Waters
Howlin' Wolf (Hubert Sumlin also)
Magic Sam
Elmore James

And for jump blues be sure and listen to some T-Bone Walker.

For modern electric blues (which is sort of a mix of various styles of blues depending on who it is) listen to:
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Jimmie Vaughan (and the Fabulous Thunderbirds)
Freddie King, Albert King, B.B. King
Albert Collins

And for people who push the envelope a bit more:
Joe Bonamassa
Robben Ford

Of course, there's a lot more. But once you find someone you really like, find out who influenced them and listen to those people too. That's one of the best ways to discover new music that you may not have known you liked. :D
