When does a guitar become a vintage guitar?

How old does a guitar have to be before it is considered a vintage guitar? One year? 30 years? Or is it "vintage" the second it is bought? There is no one correct answer to this question, but I'd like to hear some opinions.

To me, an old guitar of poor quality never become vintage; it's just an old piece of junk.

That's always been my understanding of the term vintage; as it applies to cars at least, so I assumed that would be the standard of guitars as well.

When you leave it outside for a whole week during rainy season (make sure you take the hardware off) and sell it to a moron who doesnt look at serial numbers, oh and lots of lemon juice in the summer helps to! :wink:

My first Strat, the venerable Black No. 1, will turn 25 on November 1st.

When I bought my first ever Fender, a brand new '71 Mustang, there were no "vintage" guitars. There were only old guitars and in the '70s nobody wanted an old guitar.

I like that..it means that I have at least 3 vintage guitars. I have one of unknown age, and two that were made in the 90s, one in 92 and I can't remember when I bought my Fender acoustic. Sometime in the mid to late 90s. It will be vintage soon enough. Now I want some brand new guitars that I can play without worrying about denting my vintage guitars up. But in 25 years they will be vintage so maybe I should start preparing for that day. I would pull my hair out if I had any.
