Throughout the years I accumulated guitars and recording gear. I am 41 years old now. It seems I am entering a sort of Zen stage in my life, where less is more. I want spaciousness. Threw out the old magazines, sold the aging electronic gear, stripped everything. I was able to upgrade to a custom shop strat. Yet there still remain 2 japanese strats from the 1980´s. On the one hand I want just the custom shop and the amp, nice and clean. On the other I can´t seem to let go of my old strats! This is keeping me stuck, and my anxiety disorder doesn´t help much. I wonder if you have let go of a dear old strat and you can give me spiritual advice!

The day will come when you will let go of everything. Might as well get in practice now.

here is what i am doing-

i have 4 guitars, 3 amps (soon to be 4).

i play my strat most of the time. i have a squier strat i haven't picked up in 5 years, an ovation acoustic that comes out about twice a year, and a newer epi nighthawk that i enjoy. i also have a 100 watt fender amp, a peavey envoy that's easy to carry around, and a small fender practice amp.

my wife and i have a 15 month old grandchild, and another on the way. when they get old enough, i will see if they want to play. if they do, i will have equipment ready for them, with the idea that they will inherit my stuff someday if they stick with it.

if they decide not to play, my goodies will go to a music school.

do you have kids, or nieces, nephews maybe?

share your love of music with them

just my thoughts

Do either or both of them hold special memories? If so, do you have some other reminders that would better suit your desire to let go of things?

Maybe start by letting go of one, and keeping the other for occasions when you might not want to risk your custom being scratched, etc.

And then if you haven't played the old one in 6 months, see about letting it go then.

Consider donating them to/for a good cause.

I'd say three is a good round number. Might as well hang on to the old Strats, unless of course it is imperative that they be sold. You never know when you might want to pick up a different guitar for a while. JMO of course, but I'd hang on to both of them as well as the CS.

I would keep them. Not only is one a MIJ strat from the early eighties, which were made very well, but the two were good enough to buy and play before your Custom Shop strat.

Guitars are a lot like guns. They all have sentimental value, monetary value, and if they were good enough to buy, and were reliable, why would you want to sell them? Each one will serve a different purpose, and will not sound the same as the other, due to the wood, pickups, etc.

I still have my first Strat which is now 26 years old, and I still regret selling a Telecaster I had 15years ago. I since have acquired a few more guitars in the last 26 years, but I still play my first Strat everyday.

If you get rid of your other two Strat's, I guarantee you will regret it later.

hi mike,

that's a question that you can answer only. what's more important for you - the mij's or the cs and amp? or sold one for having more money for the new gear?

if i have a gas i go on distance for some days. some decision need a while.

good luck

cheers :D

Minimalist lifestyle be damned!

Personally owned musical instruments are living, breathing pseudo-soles that have insinuated themselves into the heart of you. I'm hardly surprised you're having trouble getting rid of them..

It's a cold fish that can casually discard a guitar with which they have any sort of history..
