gateway laptop I am using for recording,

what I am doing is pluging my roland mixing board output into the mic jack for the laptop and recording in wav format in a free wavepad basic edition.

I want to ask about whats called db.

is higher the db the better it will capture the loud distorted guitar? or does that need to be turned down the other way?

The higher the db the better, up to a certain point, you will have clipping if it is too high. The programs that I use for sound recording have a colored meter showing the db levels (red usually being too much), to show how high the signal is to adjust the input level as necessary. I try to make sure that the loudest part of the signal just barely hits the red, for a good signal to noise ratio.

I like mine to peak the meter between 0 to +3db for recording. If you are using a laptop mic, it will sound like crap, and will be difficult, at best, to record anything decent. If you have no way to see the peaks of sound on a meter while recording, then you will just have to experiment to find the right setting.

If you are going from a mixing board to computer, just use an audio cable, skip the cheesy laptop mic, there should be a line-in level adjust on the computer, and an output level adjust on the mixer.

yes thats what I want to do, which is plug the cable into the mic/line in jack.

I am thinking of plugging the mixing board line out directly into the USB of Laptop instead.

decibels -db

You don't want it (meters) to be 'in the red' or clipping.

Good luck!
