I usually use heavy picks -- it seems to give me a little more control. For acoustic strumming, I'll often use mediums.

While looking for the "favorite guitar pick" thread I found this one. My photobucket doesn't work anymore and I wanted to post my new favorite pick, Fender Stainless Steel medium gauge guitar picks. Just the right amount of flex and a nice bright attack. Bought the four pack at Guitar Center today. I tried to write a review here but that function isn't working for those guitar picks.

On guitar I just use the side of my thumb. On bass I usually use medium cells, or sometimes heavy clears. That's rare though. I really don't use a pick anymore in the band I'm in now.

I rarely use picks. Most of the time, it's just fingernails and flesh.

However, certain songs call for a strumming technique that I can't adequately fingerpick; on those occasions, I use either the small teardrop-shaped Clayton 1.52mm picks with the eagle on them, or the red Jim Dunlop Jazz III picks. In a real pinch, I'll use the super-heavy (slightly) larger teardrop-shaped John Pearse picks.

...but 99% of the time, it's just my fingertips.

It's funny how some Forumites feel (insulted? offended? irritated?) that a person will revive an already-covered topic.
However, some newer posters/Forumites weren't around the first time (or first 20 times) a topic was discussed. True, they could search the archives, but what's wrong with a new "Show Your Herd" or "String Gauge" thread? New products, new members and new information may have come around since those earlier threads; also, people might have changed their preferences during that elapsed time, and that will not be covered.

If you already know it all (like we know you do, Frank), just ignore these threads and bask in your own glorious omnipotence. You don't have to condescendingly make a person feel like his/her topic is less than worthy than your interest and attention.

This poll needs the ability to pick 2 answers ....

For acoustic, I use Fender 351 Standard heavy picks.

For electric, I prefer Fender 351 Premium Celluloid medium picks.

Another vote for Fender Heavy, though I'm still in the experimenting phase with a newish guitar to see what sounds best.

I'm with you on that, but every now and then I use a thumb pick, especially if I need to pick close to the saddles, and don't want to bleed all over the fine guitar.

I'm a bit surprised that so many use a thick pick. I changed from a large triangle 1.5 to a smaller .73 at the suggestion of my teacher. I didn't think I could break the need for a substantial pick in my fingers but I got used to it pretty fast. Now I feel that I don't need one particular pick. I have some V picks, but the thick ones sound really dull.

Funny to read what I posted two and a half years ago. About six months ago I went full circle and switched from a jazz pick to a 2.0 mm Stubby. I guess I'm still evolving.

i try to stick to around .63 picks. Recently i got a few "cactus picks" and really dig them. i will probably try to buy some more.

I have one of those pick punches and everyone i know gives me all their used gift cards and credit cards so i have a huge candy jar (like one from a counter of an old drug store) close to half way filled with homemade picks. They are actually really good since the gift cards vary greatly in thickness, you can find thin - thick.

I tried a thumb pick for a while, but it was just too clumsy for me (or I was just too clumsy for it)...and the blood just makes the guitar "yours" that much more, lol...

These days I'm using Dunlop Tortex .60mm picks. Try one, they play super fast.
