I have been playing some classical pieces lately as a change up and would like to get a nylon string guitar. I have tried all the models in my local guitar stores and the one that I liked best was a Breedlove N250 http://breedlovemusic.com/guitars/passp ... s/n250-coe.

Unfortunately, there were not very many guitars locally for me to try. I tried a Cordoba C5, a couple low price Yamaha's and the Breedlove and that was about it.

I am wondering what nylon string guitars other members like and would recommend. I wouldn't mind one with electric capabilites, but it is not a requirement. My budget is $600 or less and I already have a nice steel string acoustic/electric but want something that will be a little easier to play fingerstyle and will have a "darker" tone.

Thanks

Welcome to the Forum Briese. I was looking at this model since I sold my Yamaha some time ago I have been looking at classicals. With it's laminated rosewood back and sides this guitar may possess the darker tone you seek.Image

Maunel Rodriguez model B should in your price range. Spanish built, Cedar top and laminated sides and back. You'll get your monies worth. No electics though. I think Fender are handling the Rodriguez line these days, and I seem to recall a link on this site somewhere to the Company.

If you want a classical with built in sensors for amplification, take my advice and buy something with the kit built in. I've never had good results trying to fit after market mics, piezzos, transducers etc to a purely acoustic nylon strung guitar. Ibanez do a good budget model for about $400.00, and it's worth trying. But I think you can do better with your budget. Yamaha are always good.

You tried a Breedlove, that should give you a good criteria when looking at others. Retailers such as musicians friend will carry spanish-made guitars which will not disappoint. I find it unfortunate that good luthiers will not build one a guitar for less than 2,500 dollars. Good luck out there! By the way, rectified nylon strings, which are not smooth to the touch but have a certain texture, will make a 500 dollar guitar sing!

I'm not trying to be smart, but when I was a little kid my dad would talk about Cat Gut Strings. Any one have any stories about them. I always thought he was full of it. But I guess that was the original deal. Poor Cats. :(

Thanks for the tip!

I did like the Breedlove, I was just wondering if it would be worth my time and gas to drive to a store with a larger selection. Since I live in Central North Dakota and the nearest store with a larger selection is in Minneapolis (6 hour drive one way). BTW I could also get to South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa or Manitoba in that amout of time :!:

So the reason I posted my question; is that if I am going to make a trip like that to try out guitars, I want to make sure that the destination store has the the kind/type/model that people who actually play guitar recommend.

I know someone is going to tell me to "order online and use the money you would spend on gas to get a better guitar", but I just have a real hard time buying a guitar sight unseen. As far as I'm concerned, that's about the same as getting a mail order bride. (Actually, since I work days and my wife works nights I spend more time with my guitars  ).

I have the same guitar, Hustle_PT, Alhambra 5P, and I have to say that Alhambra is one of the best nylon string guitar you can buy, in any price range.

And you can order it electrified (Fishman) or not.

Just take a look here: http://www.alhambrasl.com/index.php?option=com_productbook&Itemid=35

I have an entry level Godin, they have several brand names under their unbrella, http://www.godinguitars.com/. It's a little different, spruce top and cherry back and sides with a french polish type finish.
