Has anyone tried P-rails? It's supposed to be a p90 with a rail single combo.

Easy guys, I said I was looking for help remembering.

It's been a long time since Woodstock (West, Santana, Townsend). :P

There must be someone we have heard of that uses P-90's since.

Kid Rock's been known to play a LP Jr re-issue from time to time.

Deluxe Matt--I too have a P-90 Jones. I put a P-90 in the neck position of my MIM Telecaster, and it absolutely rocks. It made a good instrument great.
As far as P-90s in a Strat go, I put a set of Pete Biltoft Vintage Vibe SP90 pups in my Strat, and I couldn't be happier. They're P-90 pups sized to fit in a Strat, and theyre awesome. Their tone is fat and raunchy like a P-90, but they retain the Stratocaster sparkle and spank--the best of both worlds. Look them up--his pups are ridiculously great.

Tim Drake--the ASAT pups look a lot like P-90s, but they don't really sound like them; they do have the girth (sonic weight/fatness) of a P90, but their tone is a lot cleaner and clearer; there's very little of the funky grimy raunch we expect out of a P90.

As far as "top-line" guitar heros who used p-90s, have you ever heard of this guy from Liverpool who had a weakness for Japanese women? John Ono Winston Lennon?
A couple of his bandmates were apt to use those axes, too.

How about Freddie King? Most of his early stuff was recorded on a goldtop Les Paul with P-90s.

Noel Gallager from Oasis would pick up an axe with P90s, too.

Those are good ones. :) Lennon had the sunburst Epiphone, right? Kind of the equivalent of a ES-330.

I do remember Freddie with the soap-bar goldtop.

I looked up the Pete Biltoft pickups the last time you mentioned them and they sound real interesting.

It was a casino with the pick guard taken off and the paint taken off later.

Anyone ever play the Fender Black Doves? I've heard they're Fender's version of a P-90. I wonder how they compare to others.

Always been interested in them.

Superkid is right--it was a sunburst Casino that was later stripped of its finish; somewhere along the line the pickguard was disposed of.

A lot of people on the Forum give lip service to "supporting the small business owner," but they rarely do it. Pete is great--building pickups is a sideline for him; he sells them cheap because he wants to (1) drive more business and (2) he's doing it for the love of the music.

When I finally break down and do my "build", Pete's pickups are going to be what powers the whole affair. They sound spectacular.

His main gig (at one time) was the development of a device that could detect explosives or radioactive devices in the hold of a cargo ship; it was mounted on the side of a smaller tug-boat sized vessel and they would drift by each ship in the bay, ensuring that no "nasties" would be smuggled onto land. If the cargo manifest said nothing about dangerous materials (or if the level was higher than it was supposed to be), authorities were notified...

They are closer in sound to the G&L ASAT pickups than a P-90; the Black Doves are a bit cleaner and more "polite" than a P-90. Black Doves sound good, and they will get you in the territory of P-90s, but ithey aren't the same thing.
