I have played many guitars over the years but I had never played one with p90s until now. My Uncle dropped off a coupe of guitars for me to play/keep for him, and one is a Hagstrom F200p with p90s. The other is an Epiphone Dot. The Dot is fun to mess around on but feels like it's about to come apart when I play it. Just the weight of my hand changes the tuning 10-15 cents. The Hagstrom on the other hand is solid and I love the P90 pickups. It has me wanting a Strat with 3 p90s in it with the middle reverse wound. They are like all the good things about a single coil and a humbucker put together. When I go back to my single coils they sound weak now. I hope I'm not ruined now.

P-90s somehow fill in the void bewteen the single coil and humbucker,it has the sparkle of the single coil yet iit had the fullness and punch of a humbucker.I have 2 Epiphone Casinos-a '65 John Lennon and an '08 MIC natural. The John Lennon is the most comfortable playing guitar that I own for body feel and neck/fingerboard feel. The sound of a Casino is very addictive and is a must for mid-late era Beatles music.

My Non-Reverse Firebird has 3 P-90s and one of the fastest necks I've ever played. Sound wise it falls between a Nasviille Tele and a Jazzmaster and can almost come across as a semi-acoustic when the strings are worn in a bit.
Careful Matt, I don't think you're ruined, but that just might be the first P-90 G.A.S. bubble.

Cheers,
John.E

Dont stress...They will never have that soft dynamic of a Strat single coil....P90's are heaps rockier....Horses for courses..... They cant replace your strat.....

Matt I've never played P90's either but you have me intrigued.

If you want MIGHTY single coils, invest in some Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders. I have them in my Tele and they easily match/out power any single coil or humbucker they have played with.

I have been wondering about the quarter pounds. I've been looking for some higher output pups, now I might just have to try a pair out.

Upon further inspection of the Epi, I found that the truss rod was completely loose. After setting the proper amount of relief it plays and feels much better. I am already planning my p90 Strat build. Good thing I'm broke right now that way I will have time to make sure it is not just a p90 phase.

"Nine lbs, thirty-four ozs"?

Shouldn't that translate into "eleven lbs, two ozs", Steve?

(I'm guessing it doesn't sound that heavy if you say it fast enough......)

I have owned P-90 instruments that a lot of you would love to have:

mid-50's Gibson ES-175
mid 60's Gibson ES-330
1970 Gibson Les Paul Custom (alnico in neck position).

Having played those instruments for many tears, I am no great fan of the P-90 pick-up. I played the Les Paul on a digitally recorded CD, and I wish I had the chance for a do-over with a garden variety U.S. strat.

I have trouble thinking of any real top-line guitar heroes that use P-90's on a main instrument. Not that guitar greats should make someones decision for them, but it should tell you something. Who am I overlooking? I am really asking for help here, not trying to be a jerk. :)

Not knowing what kind of song you used the Les Paul on I must say that IMO that my BABY kick's anything in my stable off the map!
