I had someone email me asking me if I am going to send them the Martial Arts Equiptment since they had mailed me the money. I emailed the guy back and said what are you talking about? He said that he sent my account money. I told him that he had the wrong guy. So I checked my account and the status said it was due for a withdrawl by the 20th (it was night of the 18th) So I really called work and told them I was going to be late - went straight to the bank and explained they said - let's change you money into a new account but leave $25 in to see what will happen (they would reimburse me but it would be better to be able to track the account). Sure enough it was withdrew. Several others tried to withdraw but obviously couldn't. Thus ended my relationship with Ebay and it's one of the reasons why I still bank with Citizens today.

On further note - I am sorry that this post is so late but they keep odd hours here at the Forum and sometimes my schedule conflicts. I am on the East Coast and I am up @ 5:30 but this forum doesn't open until after I am at work. :?:

When I was buying my guitar on eBay it was to be the last guitar bought there. Then I bought another one, only because it was cheap and almost new. I'll try not to buy there anymore... Unless I find another cheap one...
Wasn't tricked in any of them. I always ask a lot of questions and demand lots of pictures. I read and check everything, so the chances of someone stealing $ from me are low.

Ebay is risky for high end vintage instruments. When I'm looking for vintage instruments I'll travel to certain dealers and shops. I also investigate and research the items I intend to buy. If you are going to drop $30,000+ doing your homework is important.

It sounds like you were 'phished'. It's a good idea to NEVER answer those types of emails, and NEVER directly to the message, and DEFINITELY DO NOT provide them with personal information. That's how they get access to your money. It's always best to forward the message right away to Ebay or PayPal (use 'spoof@' either one to forward it). This stuff isn't uncommon, unfortunately, and you aren't the only one this happens to. 'Phishers' can try to use other means as well-including fake bank sites.

Okay ... So the consensuses seems to be - Stay away from ebay.

So, where do you buy things at?

Local stores are usually out of the question, since they are too high priced and most have gotten together and "fixed" their prices at a predetermined high point. The rest that haven't done that, are even higher!

And, where do you sell things at?

I don't know anyone that reads newspapers anymore. So their adds are about useless. Garage/yard sales don't work because yard sale people are looking for a $1000 item for 50 cents, or less.

I put an item on ebay, priced below street price, for 3 months (through a friends ebay store - he's one of the few honest ones) and it just sat there. When he closed his store, I just put the item on my storage shelf. I'll keep it before I'll put a "yard sale" price on it!

It's frustrating that the crooks have taken over ebay so that you can't buy or sell through that anymore.

So, where now?

Nobody reads newspapers anymore??? In my area at least, everyone picks up the weekly free advertising papers, which you can find at any grocery store, gas station, convenience store, etc. (you ain't nobody if you don't read The Guide  ) It's a great way to buy and sell, and you can deal with people face to face to minimize the chance of ripoffs. You also might be surprised how effective that grocery store bulletin board can be. Internet can have its advantages, but it's not the be all/end all. Give me a local store or a paper catalog and a phone any day.

It's just that "I don't know anyone that reads newspapers anymore." Circulation is way down around here. So adds placed in it only get to a select few.

We don't have any free advertising papers around here either. There is one small paper that just runs advertisements, but it isn't free. The last time I got one, it was $1 a copy, and good for 3 days, if I remember right. Not many places even carry them anymore. I only hunt for one when I'm looking for something, and then only as a last resort (like most others around here) since there isn't much in it of interest. (at least to me) It's great that you do have one - and that it's still free! It would probably be more successful here if it was free, like yours is where you live.

Your right that face to face is the best way to deal. It's just getting harder to do these days.

Now that grocery store bulletin board idea might be something worth trying here. Thanks for the idea! I had forgotten they even had them. Just goes to show what a person miss's when they're always in such a rush to get things done.

You mentioned the internet not being "all/end all". How true that is. In many ways, it is very limiting. Many times I think the problems it has created far out weigh any supposed "benefits". But it IS a fact of life now days. And one that those of us with limited mobility probably rely on too much. It's just so much easier to search the internet than go to the trouble of going to a store.

Those were "the good old days". :D I remember them fondly. :)

I guess I should add that this area has had it's share of business's closing. Many places that people worked are now closed down - gone for good. Many stores don't last over 6 months. So the local economy isn't so good. And peoples buying habits reflect that.
