We all know idiot sellers try to pass off "amazing" vintage and rare Fender stuff on Ebay right. Has anyone ever thought if there was an OFFICIAL RECOGNIZED, DEFINITIVE collection of close up images of guitars, basses, amps, parts etc. somewhere online (maybe we could send in suitable pics) wouldnt it make it easier to reference the routing bumps and humps on those "original 64 P.bass body" or that "totally original 60's Strat body" auctions??? For example, most 70's P.bass bodies I see on there have usually different routing patterns. I dont know but maybe Im untrusting !!!! Any thoughts??? Anyone interested in helping trip up the fraudsters??

That database would also make it easier for new counterfeiters to enter the market and existing ones to get better..

Face it: when you can put together $1,000 worth of faked parts and sell it for $30,000, do you really think there are any 100% original "vintage" Strats on eBay? Do you think that there are really any left anywhere... that after all the parting out and swapping and 1970's modifying and 1990's restoration, do you honestly imagine that there is even one all-original '50s Strat for sale anywhere on the planet? There are probably more of them for sale right now in the US alone than Fender even built! It's like counterfeiting money, only 100 times easier, with 1/1000th of the risk of prison.

And, more important... even if there are any, why does anybody care?

It's not the sellers who are the idiots here, my friend.

Yes, too true. Un-informed buyers are usually led like children into buying crap. Im glad to say I have a few years experience and a bit of a collection myself. But on the whole, you are right. I didnt consider how much easier it would be for counterfitters. I guess its the same everywhere isnt it where black arts are concerned....everywhere that useful info is needed its always kept under a shadow of mystery. Thats life I suppose. It does make me sick that unscrupulous fakers make money out of crap but its best to know your subject isnt it... guess Ill just carry on collecting info and pics myself for my own use and be careful how I use it. A lesson for us all there !!!!!!

This website:

http://www.provide.net/~cfh/fender.html

has the closest thing to what you are talking about.

There is a section where year-by-year strats are shown.

I bought a knock off Strat from Ebay. One month later I sold it on craigslist. The frets were sharp on the edges and my hand was getting like chopped meat running up and down the neck. I wouldn`t buy an amp or guitar from Ebay after that experience. Once you buy it, it`s too late. Go to a store and try it out then make up your mind.

Yeah i totally agree..... you really don't have a clue what you're getting until it arrives :S...... I like trying guitars out before I buy them aha.... I used to blindly buy guitars, and that's why there is alot of junk in my closet lol

Ebay can be a crapshoot, to be sure, but sometimes you can really luck out. I've picked up a few hard to find MIJ/CIJ Fenders for MUCH cheaper than a dealer would sell them-and no, I'm not selling mine! But you really have to pay attention to the auction descriptions. If there is more hyperbole than hard facts, and/or only two lines in the description, you might want to pass. My favorite quotes: 'It'll only increase in value' (then why are you selling it?), 'Plays like buttah' (sounds messy to me), and of course the references to Jimi/Keith/SRV/John/Paul/George/Ringo/Manny/Moe/Jack.

As far as looking for 100% authentic vintage guitars, stick to reputable vintage dealers. They're expensive to be sure, but you should be getting what you paid for-and can get your money back if you don't. I've been to several guitar shows where dealers said they look on Ebay for relatively cheap vintage and semi-vintage stuff to resell, though they seem to be doing that less and less now for the big bucks items.

The easiest way to trip up fraudsters is to not buy from them-and ask LOTS of questions. If they're honest, they'll give you a straight answer. If not, then it's usually very easy to tell as they'll give you generic answers or none at all. But you HAVE to be specific when asking. The devil is in the details!

I do think when things are "rare" on ebay its hilarious !!! Its a phenomena of its own, "ebay rare" haha !!!! Ive had a few good deals and sold stuff but then again, I always treat people with respect and know my subject when it comes down to it. I have had a couple of Am Series P. basses from the u.s. WAY cheaper than I'd have paid in the u.k. It can work, but there are sharks...in doubt?? Walk away !!!

If you're looking for a $25,000 vintage guitar and think you'll get it on Ebay you deserve what you get. If I wanted one, or could afford one, I'd go to Gruhn, Wildwood.....some vendor with a solid reputation around the world. Ebay and Craigslist are at the bottom of that list. They're just garage sales online.

Totally right !!!! I'd NEVER pay for anything vintage from ebay, just odd little bits, you know what I mean!! But as far as anything serious goes, Id want to check it over, see it in front of me in bits etc etc etc !!! I think if you drop 25,000 $ or £ on ebay on a supposed vintage Fender, you are putting your head on the block and inviting it to be chopped off.

DO NOT TRUST EBAY - If I wasn't paying attention I was going to get $850.00 taken out of my account two days before a ski trip. You don't need anything that bad!

How could THAT happen? Did you sell something that the buyer tried to take back? Was there a dispute?
