it is impossible to find someone that understands the condition of my picking arm and hand, i've had them, but they did nothing but slow me down.

My answer is: it depends.
It depends on your learning style
It depends on the teacher
It depends on your self-discipline
It depends on what you want to know

For me, lessons are a necessity. I don't have natural talent, and my ears are definitely still in their infancy as far as being able to figure out what's being played (I play bass, and that can be quite a bit harder to hear than a lead guitar line).

I do better when I take lessons because I practice & play more. It's my hard-earned $$ paying for the lessons, and I'm not going to waste it by not playing.

My learning style is suited to organized content. Give me a foundation & a framework to hang stuff off of, and make sure I understand what I'm doing, and I'm good to go and create my own stuff. I'm willing and able to handle the "old school" scales, modes, etc. because, to me, that's giving me the foundation & framework.

Other people would find it tedious at best and would give it up because that doesn't fit their needs. If you take lessons, make sure you find the right teacher for you, and keep looking until you find the right one.

+1!

I took some lessons as a kid (back around the time that Wilbur and Orville flew their first aeroplane) and I learned a lot about chord construction, major and minor scales, strumming and picking techniques, and many other concepts which remain as valid today as the day I was exposed to them. But everyone is different -- what works for one may not work for another.

I agree 100% here,
for me though, it's a pride thing
if you can teach yourself, you've got talent
lessons, i think, not always the case of course, can weed that natural talent out of you

but there is nothing wrong with a little advice here and there

:)

pride thing???-taking lessons will make you better. There is no reason not to. You don't lose pride by being a better player and musician. If you can listen and absorb information, and learn from it, then you've got talent too. Lessons take the talent within you and help it grow and expand.

i understand my statement wasn't exactaly valid for everybody
the pride thing is, i want to be able to say that when it's all said and done, i taught myself how to play
lessons are benificial to some, but not to others
i feel i am one of the "others"
in school, i am one of the smarter kids in my class, (fact not oppinion)
and i learn better on my own with a little advice here and there
lessns, i feel, would hold me back..
for some people though, it can be the best thing that ever happened to them
it all depends on the person

plus, it takes alot of want-to to teach yourself

Don't derail other people's threads. Either post this on it's own thread or on a "Show Me Your Amp" thread.

We know you're excited about your new amp, but don't derail posts in this manner.

It might be a good idea to delete your two posts.

Don't kid yourself, there is a huge difference between smart and being educated. Monkeys are smart, and I've never seen a monkey that can really play well. For example, spelling, capitalizing, and sentence structure apparently aren't picked up well on your own.

I took lessons when I got my first guitar (75?), and without the lessons it would have been much more difficult to learn on my own, no doubt. I even know pros that still take lessons. Now I still get lessons, but from fellow players, at every jam session. No one is ever so good that they can't learn something that they didn't pick up on their own.

Of course, I'm still not very good, so......

sentence structure and spelling ect. is useless to me, i halfway understannd, it, i understand it enough to have an A in my english class
i choose not to use it. like i said, i find it worthless,
true, no one is ever to good to learn something new
i love to learn, honestly,
if i ever get in a pickle, i have several friends who are 10 times better than me and always eager to help, i go ask them, and all of them are als self taught as far as i know
and playing with friends is the best way to learn
if you listen and watch its amazing what can be learned
ther is though, a diffrence in lessons and advice

I think some people here need a bit of a reality check, even the best of the best would not be so naive to think that other people have nothing of value that they could learn from. Open up to ideas and help from all angles and utilise what you feel is of value.

Like anything in life trying to do anything by yourself is an uphill struggle that is totally unnecessary.

Oh and to the kid above, if I take a look at my school year, I can tell you a large amount of the "best in the class" have not gone far, there is a lot more to life than exams and grades if you want to succeed.

I say yes to lessons. There is only so much you can learn on your own. I took lessons for 2 years when I started playing guitar (17yrs old). A few years later I attended a jazz college. Although I did not complete the program, I took away alot of information and I felt I was a better player. When I moved back home, my friends even noticed the improvement. I went to private lessons off and on for a few years after that. I am now 37 and I would like to go back to lessons but I don't have the time or money at the moment.

I believe that is what lessons are, correct? You aren't listening to, or watching yourself.

Well, if you would please "use it" it would make your posts easier for others to understand. It makes for a hard read, leads to misunderstandings, and frankly makes you appear less intelligent when you don't even try to use the "smarts" that you say you have.

Not picking on you, or questioning your intellect, just consider this the same as a....... lesson. In other words, you could grow if you take advantage of the fact that there will always be someone smarter than you.

actions speek louder than words
yes i did say i was smart, that is a matter of fact
i would rather appear an idiot and be smart, than to appear smart but not know what i was talking about
when i said it's amazing what you can learn from watching and listening, i was refering to playing and listening to friends or other musicians play
i will not take lessons
some people do and should
i do and will not
i'm to hard headed
maybe i should, stupidity on my part, not yours, you don't worry about it,
i am in no way trying to be disrespectful, but just shareing my oppinion...
