i am new here, and i was kindof looking for some advice
i am 13, i now play a Talman Ibanez Inner City accoustic. I have had this guitar (Suizie Q) for about 6 or so years. i only started playing for real these past two years. i am ready to up my ante to an electric, but i want one that will last just about a lifetime. my dad and i were talking, and we are sure we are going Fender, but not quite sure weather to go Strat or Tele....any advice?

They are equally durable and fascinating instruments. Play them and pick the one you like.

and i guess I should add, i listen to all kinds of music, but the music that i guess you would say "turns me on" more than any is classic rock and southern rock
like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitte(did I spell that right? eh oh well), Aerosmith, that kind of thing, and a little bit of modern country which is better for this type of music?

Personally I have never liked Telecasters (I know that's blasphemy around here). I just don't find them comfortable to play, I don't like the look of them and I just don't enjoy playing them. I think you can see where this is going.....

I am definitely a Strat guy, I find them comfortable, good looking and when I play one I just feel more connected to it. Like i said though, that's just me. Tele's are good instruments, and although I don't particularly like them, I can appreciate why some people like them. You really should go and spend some time playing both. They are quite significantly different, and you may find that you instantly click with one particular model.

Instruments are very personal things, and no-one can tell you what's right for you, it your choice. First hand experience when buying any instrument really is invaluable.

Best of luck, and hopefully you and Fender will have an illustrious future together :D

Your first electric? go for a squier-some people swear by the classic vibe models.

It is your first electric, therefore you have no idea of your preferences. Buy a squire, you find out what you like, what you don't like. Now you can go and buy a really nice guitar, knowing what you like and what you don't. Otherwise you could be wasting hundreds of pounds/dollars.

Some of the squiers are very very good-ask around here, many people own one or more.

I really don't think it makes a big difference which one you choose. Your going to wish you had gone the other way. Personally I think you'll be happier with the STRAT. The shape itself makes it a more comfortable guitar to hold and play. You will fall in love with both of them for different reasons. They are each wonderful in there own way. 8) :)

Take your Dad and go to the guitar store and play some guitars, and don't be shy. PLAY THEM. Only then will you be able to make an educated decision. Just make sure your comparisons are of equal quality guitars. American/American MIM/MIM and so on. And have fun with it. 8) :) :)

No no no. Don't lead the poor kid astray just cause you had to start with a Squier. There is no risk of disliking either Fender. Like the others said, go play them and see which one you like as far as fee.

Smart kid with smart dad. Lucky. Great idea, kid. If you can afford it or your dad is letting you, of course get the Fender now. He's right about it lasting. Get the best one you can get now. Avoid loading up on cheap guitars that lead you wanting more--then you will eventually get a real Fendera and the others will sit. Get a great guitar, if you can, and you'll love it and not have the urge to get another one for at least 8 months.

Plus one on the idea that he'll want both eventually.

we'll agree to disagree-actually i did'nt start on a squire, but i wish i did. My point still stands-the kid may decide that he hates single coils, fender body shapes and necks etc and really wishes he had gone for an epiphone

I purchased a USA Tele and Strat BEFORE I bought 2 Squiers. I love my Squiers. They are great guitars!

By the way, OP, this is not sexist at all, but have you considered mustang, which has 24" scale (1.5 inches shorter than standard strat) and is therefore easier to play for small hands, but still rocks and was Kurt Cobain's favorite guitar. It also has a bright single coil sound and would be great for country IMO even though I don't see any country players with it. You could be the first. The mustang is noticeably small and easy to play. I love mine.[/quote]

i personaly dont like the body shape of the mustang all that much, i don't know why, it just doesn't appeal to me, and i do have pretty big hands and fingers for a chick and my age....but i think i'll try one out before i make my final desion( i cant spell worth a crap today...) but thank you for the advice :)
