So I know a lot of us that visit here play slide and was wondering what people's preferences were when it came to the type of slide used. Personally I have a collection that includes a sawn off 5/8 socket, a thirty year old neck from a Matues bottle that I cut and finished myself, a couple of Dunlop pyrex jobbies. Anyway I find I use a glass slide more often than metal. I still don't own a porcelain slide and have never used one (would be interested on hearing any opinions on them though).

I don't play much slide, but I have had a few over the years, and the one I still use is a pyrex slide. I had a steel slide that I liked too, but the pyrex sounds a little better to me.

I still have a small collection of original Coricidin bottles that I bought way back when they were changing from glass to plastic bottles....I would go into a store and buy several of them at a time,to me the Coricidin bottle still has the best tone.
Over the years I've tried different ones,a brass works well for acoustic, but a porcelain slide sounds dull, the best I've tried in recent years are Rocky Mountain Slides, they are similar to a pottery glaze, made from some type of clay...I find myself using one of those more often and they have several different types...check them out for a different perspective.

I use a probably, over 100 year old, small Bromo-Seltzer bottle just like this one:

I generally prefer the sound and feel of glass slides, but I generally carry around a modified 5/8" socket.

The choice of which slide I use is also subject to the sound I'm looking for; for a brighter, more biting sound, I go with the socket...for a warmer, softer sound, I go with a Dunlop Pyrex.

I don't really like brass all that much for some reason...I think it's more of a "feel" thing; brass can be a bit more "grippy" on the strings and create some drag...or maybe my brass slides needed to be polished a bit more.

I would like to try the porcelein slides, I've never tried those. Hmm..

I really like the sound of Porcelain, but they're heavy and fragile. I usually use Pyrex on my Pinky, but sometimes I like the harsh sound of Chrome. I really only use Brass on acoustic, it seems louder (or clearer?) but it's sticky, like Screamin' Armadillo said.

8) All of mine, I have only 3, and they are GLASS. Just the way it worked out. :) :) My Grandpa used a solid bar. I think it was a magnet from a cow's Stomach. He would cup it in his hand and play over the top like a lap stile but held the traditional way. :)

I have both steel and glass but prefer the glass. It has a much smoother tone and makes far less noise than the steel slide. The only problem is the glass slide will slip off my pinky and break when it hits the floor. I've bought at least 7 or 8 glass and I still have my original steel slide. I've thought about trying one of these and would be interested in other opinions. The Jetslide

I tried it briefly. It felt unnatural, too heavy and I had trouble controlling it; all the while feeling like I had a splint on for a broken finger or something.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

I had something similar to that a few years ago and found it uncomfortable and a pain to use. It would slide around on my finger to much and I found it took to much time trying to control it. :?

Back when I was working with disabled kids I used to cut up the frames of old wheel chairs to make slides out of.The chrome plating on them was really thick and they used a real heavy grade of steel to make the frames ,I still have one or two around the house somewhere.

Haven't been able to find the right size glass slide. Fingers are too fat for what I've bought. Did find a nice fitting medicine bottle but it's too short! Keeps falling off. It looks like the Coricidin bottle, Rebelsoul mentions. Steel slide I have doesn't have the 'sound' I want but a deep-set Craftsman spark plug socket, sounds great. Just a little heavy.

Been checking out garage and yard sales for the old medicine bottles.

Or..I guess I could buy this?? Ya, right!
