I had a friend we called the Transistor King because he would only play through solid state amps. He had the mistaken belief that tubes were too delicate and had to be replaced constantly.

Anyway, when he came to a jam with his usual Roland JC120 monster (I. Hate. Those. Amps) and a new (brand new at the time, early 1990s) Fender Princeton Chorus, I thought, "Here we go again, Solid State Hades..."

I was pleasantly surprised; the amp sounded rich and full and had a lot of character. The clean channel was great, and worked well with the overdrive pedal I had at the time (an Ibanez Soundtank TubeScreamer). The distortion channel was a bit noisy, though. I didn't like the chorus effect, but I hate chorus, for the most part.

Also, we were able to use it as a PA at a small informal jam (very low volume).

I don't know what a good price for these amps would be, but for a solid state amp, they're pretty good.

NC,

I've had a Princeton Chorus for about 2 years. I think they were as good as it got for the solid state Fender Amp line-up. I enjoy playing through the amp. I'm very happy w/ it for a solid state, and wouldn't mind finding another for a back up. I think I paid in the neighborhood of $250 for mine (excellent condition). I see them on Craigslist anywhere from $150 - $300.

I think if'n the amp is in good shape and you can get them down a bit on the price (bring cash), you'd have an amp you'd be happy to own.

NC,

For comparison, here's a link to a Princeton Chorus I found this evening. It's pretty typical for what I see used.

I think you'd be happy with one of these.
