I love playing guitar. I wouldn't mind playing that for the rest of my life. That's why I want to make a band. My friend already volunteered to be the bassist, and I'm on the hunt for a drummer and another guitarist. Only problem is, there's no local rock scene or bands. And I literally mean NONE.
Every band (in my school and all the others in the city) is this new genre called Hardcore. To make it short...you growl and scream and put "breakdowns" into this music and that's what it is. Anyone can do that! I could have a one man band if I did that! Don't get me wrong but I do like some of this, but not very much. It all sounds the same to me.
I'd love to be part of the first rock band here, but it would kinda be like George Washington crossing the Delaware: something no one here has ever seen before. Revolutionary for lack of a better word. Any advice?

Get good with a looper

but seriously I have seen very good performances done with just one person using a looper. They add in the parts, and the music builds up, it really comes alive.

Check out Lincoln Durham's live shows (he has a EP recorded live at the Saxon Pub that showcases his live sound); he plays guitar, harp and a "floorboard", and is able to "tour" with just a couple of guitars and an amp--no band.

All I'll say is that this "hardcore" has been around since the 80's/90's, it's hardly new and I would challenge you to do it by yourself because you clearly have no idea about it, especially if you think it's easy.

create your own "scene" place ads in your local music rags and local music stores looking for like minded people...you may be very nicely surprised

And I'd like to add to this, that what he mentioned isn't hardcore. That obnoxious breakdown filled s*** is usually called metalcore or post hardcore.

Also, if you can't find a drummer get a drum machine. Not exactly the same, but it can be damn cool and do some things a human drummer could never dream of doing.

First thing you've got to do is get a band together. Then PRACTICE/PRACTICE/PRACTICE. Learn about 10 or so songs that sound GOOD to you and your all set. Then all of you, I mean the whole band. Go Talk to maybe a Church guy or Coffee House guy or even a School guy, and ask if you can put on a one hour show some evening, or even an afternoon Performance. If the kids like you, do another one. If they don't, MORE PRACTICE. Don't get discouraged and have some fun with it all. :)

----Danny,

getting a band together's alot easier than said. my town has no local scene whatsoever, except for screamo bands, which are incredibly $@!&. the closest place with a scene to me would have to be melbourne.
thats why when i get the money ima get myself a really good quality drum machine. only drummer i can find puts 2 bar fill ins in every bar

+1000...I live in one of the most heavily populated metro areas in this country, and still have had more than a hard time finding band members. Everybody just wants to put on their skinny jeans and eyeliner and scream and cry about mommy and daddy. Not my idea of music.

caster360, you have a bass guitar player, the drum machine makes sense. Let us know how it works out.

"Scenes" begin with one person. With enough blood, sweat, tears, passion, work, work, work, work, and work, you can be instrumental in developing that scene you crave on a local level. Very much the way the punk - hardcore scene developed. I suggest you read "Our Band Could Be Your Life" by Michael Azerrad. It documents the development of the indie punk scene around the country. Then I challenge you to find the folks you need to make the music you want. Find some places to play. Find other related activities in your community to network, such as community theaters, charity organizations, boys and girls clubs, food co_ops (often have markets and festivals needing entertainment). Pay them to let you play if you must.
Radicalize yourself!
