... when you hear it played back. Does anyone find it the same with their guitar tone? Not too long ago I posted a thread about the difference between the tone I hear when playing vs the tone when played back on a recording. Since then I've been recording everything I play and now I find that the tone is not nearly as bad as I originally thought. Weird huh?

With my voice...I seem to 'come to terms' with it more the more I hear it. But I still hate it. :?

As far as guitar tone goes, I do feel that it changes a little bit from hearing it in person and hearing it recorded. I find, with the mic I use at least I lose a little high end and gain a little low end. So I will compensate for that with the amps eq controls. Even then, I do have moments similar to when I hear my voice back where I second guess my tone, but I ignore those feelings and step away from the recording for a minute. When I come back and listen again, I find that I am a lot less critical of it and a lot of times I really like it.

It's very common for a rehearsing guitarist to think his sound is brighter than it really is. The recorder will reveal this. Your amp should sound uncomfortably bright if you are going to like what you hear afterwards. Other things the recorder will also reveal is poor meter and sloppiness. When you are recording yourself it is always better to play a simple part and do it cleanly and with good meter than to attempt a complicated part you believe will lead to glory. The bible verse, "pride goeth before a fall" is never more appropriate than when you are recording yourself. Keep your part simple and keep your FX simple too. Resist the urge to showboat.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Agreed!! Regularly listening to your guitar playing back on tape can be a useful learning tool (and all-too-often in my case a humbling experience). Your brain can sometimes trick itself into thinking your playing is better than it really is -- the tape, unfortunately, doesn't lie! :)

I've heard my speaking voice recorded so often, I'm used to it.

My guitar on the other hand--is sometimes the reverse--it sounds worse on a recording.
But that's if I record direct.
