So I'm looking at an Epiphone Les Paul and the price of it is $409. What I know about the guitar is that it is a factory second which I guess means that it has a small imperfection on it somewhere. The sales lady said that 90% of the time they can't find it and that is the case with this one too.

It is a Standard Plain Top. It's a beautiful gold finish and I'm not sure what it's called so I can't help with that. She didn't know the exact year of it but she said it was newer, probably within the last 5 years. They received the guitar in 2010 so she assumes thats when its from.

So from the very small amount of info I'm giving you, do you think $409 plus tax is a reasonable price for a Epiphone Standard Les Paul Plain Top? It is priced without a gig bag or stand so add another probably $50 worth of accessories including a strap.

All help is great!

Ummmm what? I umpired 3rd grade baseball for $75 being paid by SYBA. I have 25 dollars from mowing my grandmother's lawn. I'm working at a Renaissance Festival, for 10 hour days at five dollars an hour for 7 days. If you're capable of doing simple math, that adds up to $450. I have worked my @$% off for this guitar and am continuing to do so. Don't jump to conclusions that my parent buys me everything I want because you are so wrong.

I hate when pompous know-it-alls come and throw something in your face on a simple question.

Musiciansfriend.com everything is always 15% off the already great prices AND no tax and free shipping. Is this question a joke? Your guitar is being stored in mint condition in a warehouse, not being damaged by "shoppers" in guitar center. It will arrive in perfect brand new condition. Great customer service. If I wanted that guitar I'd call the 800 # and get it for about $340 tax free.
.

Are you being paid by musiciansfriend.com for advertising? I will NEVER buy a guitar sight unseen and without having a chance to look at it myself. That is a golden rule of guitar buying.

Ever heard of a family owned business? The guitar is coming from one of the best music stores in my state. This guitar is being stored in conditions that are just fine. "Damaged by shoppers?" If you walk into a music store seriously looking to purchase a guitar, the probability of somebody damaging it are pretty low.

Thank you Nevin for your very reasonable response. I come to the Fender Forums to get advice from people who are experts in this area and I will continue to do so. I can live with the occasional imbecile who thinks they know everything. So again thanks for the help Nevin. Any other opinions?

I agree with nevin...you should be able to pick up a brand new Epi LP std. for right at $400 anyway. Then you don't have to worry about whatever mystery flaw the guitar might have that you have overlooked only to find out down the line it's become an issue.
hth...good luck.

----Danny,

Yeah, I was just looking around at Sweetwater, Guitar Center, and Musiciansfriend and was thinking the same thing. It's interesting though, I can't find this guitars finish anywhere. Can it be that I'm attracted to guitars with weird finishes?
Maybe I can haggle....

She said that factory seconds don't have issues that affect playability. She said its usually a knick or chip in the finish.

Haggle Flame.... Show them the internet pricing. Start low -below $350.00 Make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Believe me they've got some wiggle room. If they won't come down right away; walk away and tell them you'll think about it and leave the impression you're going elswhere. If you really like it you can wait for it. Good luck and please don't smash it when you get it...

Even a mom & pop store should meet any internet price, at least the ones around here do. Their posted price may be higher but they pretty much have to match Musiciansfriend, GC etc if they want to stay in business.

I agree, it's just so odd because these guys are pretty fairly priced.

I have only bought 1 guitar on the net, all my other guitars and gear have been bought in a store. I usually play before I pay.

My advise is, if you cannot find the finish like that guitar from an on line store or another guitar shop in the area, you like how it plays and sounds, then throw the money down on it. It is your money.

I have seen Epiphone LP Standards from $349 used to $399 new. I know this is a link to the dreaded Guitar Center but look at this (i do not like them, but they are just about everywhere). Also click the options and look at the specs. See if this sways your thoughts for a price of $409 for "B" stock guitar. If it does not change your opinion that $409 is just a little high, then spend your hard-earned money on that guitar.

If/when you get it, post pics. I love looking at guitars.

A "SECOND" from Epi will have "USED" stamped into the wood on the back of the headstock. There is no Epiphone warranty at all. Epi's warranty is pretty good too. I'd pass on this deal.

I knew you would say that but you like me and every other guitar player, we can,t help it. Its in our DNA if you continue to play you will want to upgrade and you will. If you really like the epi Les Paul you will want a Gibson. I understand your feeling about it now but that will change. As you get better playin you will want much better equipment. But for now you will like the epi Les Paul there not bad.
