I knew he used cabinets very often, like at Monterey, but a whole Fender stack? Didnt he use a Twin Reverb for recording and his earlier gigs?

BTW Intriguing, fun fact: Jimi Hendrix would reach his hand into a drawer full of guitar picks at Manny's in New York and pick whatever medium gauge he pulled out, turns out most of the time what he pulled out was D' Andria Celluloids, more than likely around a .71mm gauge. Learned that the other day

Although Jimi used Marshalls almost exclusively including his Monterey debut he had on occasion used various other amps.Mike Jefferies had signed Jimi up for an ill fated sponsorship deal with Sunn amps who would supply the backline and PAs for his concerts in exchange for using his picture on their ads-the message reading:"Have you ever felt a sound?"Jimi Hendrix uses Sunn amps. The amps were so plagued with breakdowns and blowing up that Jimi gave up using them all except for the monster Collesium PA heads which rated at 200 W were pretty good as guitar amps for Jimi.

Jimi had Marshall gear stored in several areas across the US so that he didn't have to spend so much time lugging around the same gear.I believe that he came to use Fender at a couple of Southern U.S. venues because of transportation problems despite having gear in several places.I have a large lifesize poster of Jimi at that venue using Fender amps and the white Strat with a Tele neck.I believe that the Newport JazzFestival was the only concert that the Strat/Tele was used as I haven't seen it in any other pix.The whole Newport Jazz Festival footage of Jimi was once available in DVD but I believe that it was discontinued and doubt that we'll see it again unless janie can weasel herself a big cut from it.

It looks like the cabinets are loaded with JBL speakers (looking at the aluminum dust covers). I have seen Hendrix gear list that said he had used JBL's in his Marshalls.

During his all-too-brief career, Jimi was known to use pretty much every brand of amp then available at one time or another. The two shows I saw him play he used Marshall (Monterey) and Sunn (Sacramento). Here's a shot with him on stage with the MC5......

The amps are Kustom 200's wired to the rare 3 x 15 cabs loaded with Altec 418C's.

The rosewood Strat is also noteworthy.

Arjay

Nevin I have a video of the same session somewhere among all my VHS stuff but since I trashed my VHS machine I have nothing to play the tapes on but if my memory serves me correctly there were Marshall 1/2 stacks in the studio in the background of the video but he could've well been jacked into a Fender that was off camera.BTW I can get pretty darn close to that tone using my JCM 800 2204 with the 1960 cab and my Vox Clyde McCoy wah,so maybe it was done on a Marshall after all but Jimi was such a master of tone he could make a 5W Silvertone sound cool.I have seen studio pix of Jimi using Fender Twins so the Fender is still entirely possible. There will always be questions and suppositions how Jimi created such unique inimitable tones. He had such a great ear for tone and such an inherant knack for creating strange and beautiful sounds, I just put it down to tonal alchemy after all there was a large element of magic in his music.

That's a good pic,and Strats with Tele necks floated around in those days,Duane Allman used one also, there's pics of him with one.
The photo of Jimi that Arjay posted is him with Delaney and Bonnie and Friends.
