do people who, like me, will never be famous, actually gig in local dives with these things?

There are a few bands here who play mostly relatively cheap solid state amps live, they're doing quite well for themselves and may even be "famous" one day
It sounds to me like the line 6 has the mustang beat feature wise, 15 watts isn't that much of a difference, and there's the added convenience of already having the foot switch.
Really though you should go to a shop and try both with your own guitar.

About a year ago I purchased a LINE 6 SPIDERJAM, and for a $399.00 so called hunk-a-junk, its a ROCKING little amp For practice in My house its perfect and will do any thing sound wise you can think of. In short I like it and its worth every penny. I have on ocation used it at open mike night and it keeps up nicely. Save your money. 8) :) I also have a Peavey Vypyr and the LINE 6 is the best. :)

Thanks. Dudes, I've been researching and I keep reading about a fizz problem with the Mustang. Does anyone know if Fender fixed that or if that was overblown or what?

I see reviewers loving it and others saying it's a piece of junk!

Yes I know there's a separate section on this board related to amps, but I'm asking y'all here in the general lounge.

Thanks.

Don't pick an amp based on backing tracks. Get your backing tracks here http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/ Download them to your MP3 player and play through the amp.

I agree play both amps at the store.

Complete, total agreement with DannyDuke. The L6 Spider Jam is (13 months months ownwership) used almost daily.

And yes, it's a $399 non-tube, non-Fender, but for practice and casual, it does everything asked. Including have a bass stuck in it, at house volumes. And sounds remarkably good, of course, with a Fender guitar.

Highest recommendation for the little box.

Sounds like you're headed for the Spider Jam to me! It's a fine amp. I'd go with it over the Fender.

I have the non-Jam Spider III 75W. My first amp...and it is a lot of fun to play with. I still have it but play my DRRI and Marshall Class 5 more, now that I have some pedals.

I think I should point out valve amps. I know you are probably not considering one because they are too loud, but that is no longer true.

Take a look at the small valve amps, from the 5 watters(class five, blackstar ht-5r), and the more powerful 20 watt amps that should keep up as well as a 75-100watt solid state, or so i'm told. Even the 5 watt amps are used by giggers in pubs etc. They are designed for low power practice, and gigging. They sound much better. Also quite cheap.

Look at it this way. Fender isn't really known for it's stellar effects. Line 6 is.
My GDec 30's "studio quality effects" are best adjusted by turning them off. They're horrible especially through headphones. So are the amp models as well as the various reverbs.

I use it mostly to practice my timing with the drumbeats.

I own a Mustang 1 and I think it's a great amp. Playing a Stock Epiphone LP Standard through it and, No Fizz. I tried out one of the larger Mustangs and didn't notice any fizzing either. Maybe it's a sporadic problem with these amps. I'll say one thing about the Mustangs, I don't think you'll get as nice a clean tone as the '65 Twin setting gives out of a line 6. If that matters.

Well...I don't think I've made it much of a secret around here, but I am NOT a fan of Fender amps. There are a few that are nice, but I look at Fender amps like I look at Gibson guitars; You pay a price for excellence and get mediocre. Sure they do have some nice tube amps, but I personally believe that there are better amps out there for the same price, or even a little less. Now if we were talking about vintage amps, my opinion might be a little more positive, but when it comes to new amps, I don't give Fender a second look. Like the Supersonic 22, $1200 and all I hear are people complaining about all the noise issues.
So, I said all that to say this : Given the choice between the Mustang and the Line 6, I'd choose the Line 6.
