There is a guy selling a 1980 Gibson SG (with black humbuckers, so I think its a Special). Off white, gold hardware. Was modified to have only one tone and one volume pot. What is this thing worth? I'm going to try to attach a photo.

I don't know how much you should pay. Me, I wouldn't give you a nickel for a Norlin-era Gibson that had been hacked to boot.

+1. If you really like it, it's pretty much up to you. The Norlin Era Gibbys were considered like the CBS era Fender. I have a 72 CBS Strat and love it though. I woildn't want it modded myself.

The book value for an S.G. of that era would be around $1,600-$2,100 but since it has been extensively modded the value plummets accordingly.I wouldn't pay more than $500 for a guitar that hot-rodded but that's not an official estimate. It may well be worth as much as $1,000 depending on the quality of the mods but I somehow doubt it.

Not sure what that knob is for. Basically, I'm feeling like this is not worth owning. Seems to be the underlying consensus.

Up to you whether it's worth owning, it might sound good. Any chance of playing it and finding out the asking price? I just find that knob curious but whatever it might be a good player. Try it out if you can.

Give it a shot. If the price is right you could always return it to its original condition. But I wouldn't go much over 5 bills for it. But if it picks you..........

The general consensus of what people here think you should pay for it is probably all your going to get if you ever try to sell it as an investment piece it is not. Personally, I wouldn't even pay the general consensus price for an adulterated, lower end Norlin specimen SG. Dollar for dollar, you're probably better off looking into some of the new, lower end SGs (used too, of course).

Actually, you really should be looking for a Stratocaster!!!

For about $550 you could get a brand new Epiphone G-400 Custom that is the 3 pup model of the one you posted, the Epi is a fabulous guitar for playability and tone,I have one and wouldn't sell it for $1000-it sounds that good.

I actually play an American Strat most of the time, but a guy offered me this SG for a Mexi Strat that I have and $200. Seems like to much to part with, in my opinion.

I've just been looking for a Gibson to pair with my MIA Strat...though I'd prefer a ES-335 to an SG, this one just came along first...and obviously the price is much more affordable that most other Gibsons.
