Theres some topics going on about who has done what and music in the family(Questions for Maruuk and Did your Parents Play Any Musical Instruments), so I thought, let's get a topic where people can tell their story :)
So tell me everyone, whats your musical history? When did you start playing, what styles have you played, who inspired you, music in the family, what kind of bands have you been in, and all that stuff

well, lets see, i don't have much of a history, but here it is:

i started playing around 11 and a half or 12 with a cheap no name acoustic my dad had, but never played.... i was inspired by a show on vh1 with hendrix and zep. in it... i took lessons for about 2 years... for christmas about a year later i got a squier electric with a small peavy tube amp.... a year later i got an electric-acoustic and kept playing off and on during sports seasons, which i still do.... i then got my epiphone elitist les paul and a 65 watt fender amp... finally, i got my deluxe players on my 16th bday and thats pretty much my story.. nothing complicated, but it works for me

1st, I started music on the trombone...the closest thing to a bass I was able to play as a 4th grader (tuba was what I wanted - not an option).

Finally, in Jr. High school I started to play the bass guitar....yea!

That is my career choice, some 27 or so years later...god, I am old...though I am still learning...the old dog stuff is BS...it just hurts more.

The journey continues............. :D

My own story, nothing exciting

I started playing flute at the age of nine or ten, and quickly went further on to play clarinet both solo lessons and in orchestra,3rd and 2nd clarinet, for 3 or 4 years before putting music on the shelf for 2 years(i started listening to rap and forgot all about classical music). During that time i had changed school and now i went to school with a drummer/guitarist and a guitar player in my class and an excellent drummer in the parallel class, so they wanted to form a band and play at the graduation party. I was invited to play bass and did that, it immediately developed into a Nirvana jam band. after half a year we stopped playing. a began playing guitar but didn't really practice for 3 ears during which i briefly played in a garage punk band but only me and my brother was capable of playing so nothing happened. then i got a cs 69 replica and started taking playing serious, half a year later i started trying to really learn instead of just playing a lot and a few weeks later I'm writing this
This post got too long and too boring

Sang in church since I was 10 or 11, discovered I could pick out harmonies by ear. Picked up the guitar (a neighbor's junky True Tone acoustic) after HS graduation after my brother tried it for a couple months and put it down. (He picked it up again after he saw me playing and plays to this day!) Got a Mel Bay chord book and a Lyrichord song book. Boy, the first year I was lousy, though I put in at least an hour each day while in college. Did rhythm and song leading for 25 years for various groups. Played bluegrass in a band for 3 years, and took up improvising lead about 4 years ago (the ear, hands, & brain finally got together!). Never took a formal lesson, just picked up chords and licks from fellow players. Still sing some though I can't quite play lead and sing at the same time, yet! Our band and orchestra plays for nearly 2,000 people each week.

Both my mom and dad have singing ability, my paternal grandmother was a piano teacher, my maternal grandparents played guitar and fiddle, and I sang in choir with my wife and her folks. It's amazing how music has blessed my life! I always dreamed of playing lead, now I do!

Started playing in the 8th grade. Was really into the grunge scene, so I spent a lot of time banging out Smells Like Teen Spirit. Played in a band for a few years during highschool, great times. Took classical guitar while in highschool for two years, won the guitar award(not bragging, just pride...lol). After highschool, college came and at that time I really kinda lost the time to play. After college came work so I had effectively walked away from it for about 6 or 7 years. I noodled around hear and there but nothing I would really call "playing". Then last year I realized I missed it too much, so I'm back playing every spare second I can. Taking some "refresher" lessons and loving the 65 Custom Shop Closet Classic I just got.

I won't make the same mistake again, I'll never stop playing now.

I started playing the guitar when I was 10 but I put it down for many years because of jobs and raising a family. Now at 59, I got the interest to play again so I practice as much as I can. Blues were always my favorite so I enjoy B.B. King, Clapton, Buddy Guy, and others guitarists like Coco Montoya.

Picked up the guitar in 1966 (10 years old) learning folk songs and "Sloop John B." Started gigging in coffeehouses at 14, taught myself piano and took up bass at 15 and joined a rock band, played a bunch of album and jingle sessions. Attended the Jordan College of Music for one year as a guitar performance major, got bored and hit the road as a solo... five years of lounge gigs.

Got sick of the whole thing and went into the advertising business, sold my guitars. A few years later, bought an MIJ Strat and started recording in a buddies studio for fun. Got blown away by the Korg M-1, got a computer, learned MIDI, started collecting synths and mics. Started moonlighting from the agency doing video soundtracks, spent the money on more gear.

11 years ago I quit my job and started producing music full time. Since then I've done music for national commercials, scored some documentaries, wrote monthly columns for two major music mags, been music director on shows for Fortune 100 companies, put two kids through college and had a great time.

Saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan when I was 9. I've had guitar on the brain ever since. Got my first one for Christmas when I was 11. A very cheap Kay flat-top.

Worked, saved money, bought more stuff. Actually learned to play. Went on the road when I was 19. Played professionally til I was 24. Learned bass along the way.

Stopped playing full-time in 1978 when I was 24 (yes I am quite old) and married the woman I'm still with. Got a "real job" and played weekends.
Watched my kids grow up.

Played weekends til 1989. Now, I do the occasional sitting-in thing with a couple of bands or do a solo or duo thing. Still own a room full of performing and recording gear. Do a lot of recording.

My kids are grown, with families of their own and I'll be retiring from my "real job" next year. Then I'm going to start all over.

It all started for me by seeing a guitar in the corner in my living room that wasn't being played. It belonged to my mother. I tryed to learn how to play it on my own when I was about 9 with a book my mother had from when she took lessons in the 70's lol. I told my mom I wanted to take lessons but we never had much money and nothing really came of it.....but one day when I was in grade 5, a local music teacher was randomly making phone calls house to house in my town looking for students (WEIRD!).... so my mom decided to sign me up lol..... I started out playing a horrible cheap acoustic that I rented off the guy for $5 a month (I didn't use my moms guitar because it was too big for me)..... after a few months I wanted to quit because it hurt my fingers too much.... So I told my teacher I wanted to quit.... and he said.... "Ok.... I respect your decision... but my I ask one question? Why do you want to quit?" So I told him and he pulled out another cheapo that was easier on the fingers! aha..... I'm so glad he did everything he could to keep me into playing guitar :) .... Now.... let's fast forward a year later to when I got my first guitar! I was out waiting on the corner of my street for my friend to pick me up to go to our weekly bowling league..... but for some reason I didn't get picked up :S...... so I came back home and my mom was rather disappointed because she wanted to have the guitar waiting for me in my room when I got home. She had ordered me a nova guitar out of the sears cataloge that came with a cheesy 5 watt amp! lol..... I loved the thing! Now fast foward another year to when I was in grade 7..... My first "band".... ohhh god it was a joke.... Me and some friends tried to pick up Californication by the Red Hot Chili Peppers by ear.... it sounded quite bad..... Then....later that year, we finally found guitar tabs in the internet and I was soooo excited..... I'd print endless amounts of Blink 182 tabs off trying to learn how to play like my favourite band (of the time lol) Me and my best friend played "Dammit" for my class the day after I learned it (and he attempted to sing :S) I still remember that I got the fingering for the power chords backwards lol.... my guitar teacher never covered any rock guitar stuff.... He basically just taught me the essential rudiments of music..... so I had to figure all this stuff out for myself... Over the years I've played many different styles (Punk,Metal,Funk,Pop,Rock n Roll,Blues,Jazz,Country,Ska,Reggae,Surf,Rockabilly,Shred) Nowadays I mainly play blues with my new band..... I could've went on forever about all my musical experiences, and all the gear I've purchased over the years..... but WOW..... I think I've went on long enough already.... sorry guys... I got caught up in the moment lol

Like many my age, it was the Beatles and, later on, the Monkees (don't laugh, they used great session guys) that inspired me to ask for a guitar for Christmas 1967. Got a $9.99 acoustic that I couldn't put down. Went through a series of cheap, cheesecutter Japanese electrics before I saved up enough bucks for a brand new, straight from the Fullerton factory 1971 sunburst Fender Mustang. And the rest is history . . .

Started playing in 1986 age 11, my dad taught me the basics and have gone from strength to strength, till my hand got damaged by going through a glass window.

Cut my tendons, nerves, little veins to, lost feeling in little finger and half or ring finger - am right handed nearly went leftie.

Now i can't play proper bar chords, i use my thumb instead and only got a 3-4 fret span - used to have 5-6.

I was pissed off at the time but i got used to it, i'm a better guitarist now than before it happend.

go figure!

i might even put some of my old bands music on so you can see if you can tell...
