I saw JLH back in the early ‘80s at Gilly’s http://www.gillysjazz.com/news/ in Dayton, OH.

He was backed by members of ‘The Steve Miller Band’; I recognized the band at first because of bassist Lonnie Turner unique left handed Mustang bass in the video for ‘The Joker’ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmVusVh4TRQ

I introduced myself to him, told him played guitar, and he took me back stage to JLH. On the way to the dressing room, I asked Jerry Gillotti (the owner of Gilly’s) if I could have JLH’s promo picture that was on the wall, he said “Yes”.
After talking to JLH for just a few minutes, I asked him to autograph the picture. He hesitated for just a second, and signed it.

When we left the dressing room, Lonnie turned to me and remarked that he couldn’t believe that JLH signed the picture, “Why?” I asked, because JLH really could not read or write, and only could write his name, so he could sign a check. He almost never autographed pictures!

I still have the picture :)

I love the John Lee line "He's got the boogie woogie in him and you gotta let him get it out."I think he wrote that about me from the way I was gravitated to his music the first time I heard it when I was 10 or 11 and got a couple of John Lee Hooker 45s among a pile of 12 I got in a "mystery record package"at Woolworth's.

Great tune man! I thoroughly enjoyed that one. In fact it's playing for the second time on the other browser window! 8)
