Okay lets speak hypothetically for a moment.
What if I am filthy rich and can just do what ever I want with my money. Let's say I give a lot of money to charity and family and I have a nice stock of gear in my new 4 million dollar houses' music room. I deserve to have a little fun, do I not?
I purchase the guitar and smash it right there on the spot. Everybody looks at me in disgust, people are astonished that I just did that.
Okay what happened? I got a bunch of people to absolutely hate me, but did I have fun doing it? Yes.

Imagine how many guitars are smashed each day. Now are those a waste too? When a famous person does it, is it ok? Paul Stanley smashes a $10,000 Washburn every concert. Nobody gives him any flak...

Paul Stanley is a azzhole.

If you're looking for absolution for your hypothesis here, forget it. You'd have better luck preaching pedophilia at a Promise Keeper's convention.

I would much prefer to hear someone who's good play a guitar than see some Bozo smash one. :(

You have every right to do so. It's your money, and after buying the guitar, it's your instrument to do with as you see fit.

If you were asking, "What would you do?" as in, "What would your response be to my colossally wasteful and stupid display?", I would probably just shake my head and say, "What a colossally wasteful and stupid display..."

If you were asking, "What wasteful or extravagant action would you take?", well that's a different answer...I'll get back to you on that one.

You mentioned Paul Stanley smashing a $10K Washburn every show; two things--knowing the business/financial savvy that both Paul and Gene possess, I can almost guarantee that's not a $10K guitar he's smashing.

Secondly, no matter what the cost of the instrument (or how rich you are), it's stupid to smash it, period...all opinions about KISS aside.

We're not saying you can't do that, we're just saying, "Why? The 'payoff' isn't worth the cost."

Nope, it is stupid then, too.
When Pete Townshend (WHO? :P ) did it in the 60s, it was novel and new and it fit the image he was putting forth.
When Hendrix set his guitar on fire, it was a poetic statement that fit the times he lived in.
Every other person, from Paul Stanley to Kurt Cobain to Garth Brooks to FenderFlameStrat who has done it is an unoriginal copycat wastrel who is unable to express himself in a constructive way, and therefore is displaying how inarticulate and unimaginative they really are.

That's offensive to me. Hard feelings now. Unoriginal copycat wastrel who is unable to express himself?! You know nothing about how I express myself or original I may be. You have no right to insult me like that, or any right to insult the great artists you listed above.

I was stating my opinion about the scenario you brought up. No need to take offense.
No, I don't know you. But if smashing a guitar--no matter what the cost--is your idea of fun, than that tells me something about the kind of person you are.
I'm not trying to pick a fight, you said you would like to do something that many of us here find wasteful, unoriginal and stupid...I'm just expressing my feelings about that.

It would depend on how much the lottery winnings were. If it were enough to retire on, I would retire, open a guitar shop. Hire a decent luthier, a guitar teacher, bass teacher, and a drum teacher. Buy, sell, and trade musical instruments. And strive to be the best Mom/Pop music place around. My goal would be to offer an experience that would make my shop to be the best anywhere.

I said nothing about your playing. For all I know, you're a great guitarist.

I said that anyone who smashes a guitar (including those guys I mentioned, some of whom I like) is just being unoriginal, and needs to find a better way to express themselves and/or fire up the audience. In my mind, Townshend and Hendrix are the only two that have the right to do so; one is dead and the other stopped doing that 20+ years ago.

To destroy an instrument--cheap, valuable, ugly or nice-- is a waste. Therefore, someone who does that is, by definition, a wastrel.

You got upset when we took your "fun" scenario seriously; don't take my opinion so seriously. It's just MY opinion.

...and if you were to walk up to me while I were playing and say I was unoriginal, I would assume you had no taste in music. :D

I've got an even better idea on how to draw a crowd. Take that $20,000 guitar and smash it, then throw what's left into the passenger seat of your half a million Lamborgini, pull it into the garage of your four million dollar house and set fire to it. Would that be cool or what?

Or if you're insistent on destroying $20K worth of guitar(s), buy 100 $200 guitars and then break all of those. It would be a bigger mess for somebody to pick up, since you seem determined to be noticed.
