I would walk into the Guitar Center Platinum section and buy a really expensive, maybe $20,000, guitar. Then as soon as the transaction is complete, smash the guitar right there on the spot. :D

What would you do?

I sure as heck wouldn't do that! Why trash a guitar just because you could afford to? I would go shopping for some guitars and amps, but you wouldn't catch me trashing them, that would just be moronic!

+1000!

I detest the nouveau riche and their profligacy.

If I bought a guitar without the intention of keeping it, I would give it to some kid who was learning to play, but couldn't afford a good one--kind of pass it along, y'know...

Somthing that might make you feel good about the up comming generation. The other day my wife ask our fifteen year old grandaughter who is not the least bit materialistic, "What would you do if you were rich and could buy anything you want". She thought a minute and said, "I guess I'd buy a new DVD movie". We about cracked up>

I simply can't fathom the rationelle for wanting just to smash up a $20,000 instrument even though this is hypothetical and very unlikely. If I paid $20,000 for an instrument I'd have to show some respect for the artisan who created it by treating it as a unique and top quality instrument. To smash up a beautiful instruments for shits and giggles just because you can afford to would be a slap in the face of the craftsman. If I won big money I'd have to form some kind of trust to teach under priviledged kids guitar and other instruments,to supply them with instruments and further the musical education of truly gifted kids along the lines of the John Lennon Foundation.$20,000 would supply over 100 kids with good guitars-now doesn't that sound better than destruction?

Wow. You guys are truly getting upset over a little fun thought. This is deeply disappointing, I thought you guys could go for a little joke every now and then. My bad I guess?

So let's say the Lotto was $45 mil. and I won. First, I'd select cash value, so I'd get about 28 mil. Uncle Sam would take his cut, probably 50+%. So I get $14 million to "improve my life". HMMMM???? There's lots of things I would like to have, do, see and master. Thing is, I have family who could use things more than I. My brother has his own buisness, and due to the current economy, he's got it pretty tough. It wouldn't take much to get him back up comfortable and make his life a whole lot easier. I have other brother inlaws who never got to the good side of life and even though they would probably squander the gift, that would be their chiose to, and just another lesson they'd learn the hard way. My kids, 30, 28 & 25 were taught to fend for themselves and have done a pretty good job. I would not hand out new houses or anything, but would help out to get then where they want to be in life. As for myself, of course I'm allowed to blow the money as I feel, right? Probably not, what's her name will be spending it on whatever, even in her sleep. I'd set up to meet and tour some of the guitar factories, PRS, Gibson, Fender... and have a custom guitar (or more) made just for me. I'd get to meet some of my idol players, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Joe Satriani..... and just hang and feel out their love for music and where they are. I'd make sure I'd have some good seats to any of the up coming concerts of my choice to enjoy. I'd surely buy a new home in a good area and with enough room for a studio away from the house so I could jam when ever I wanted without bothering anyone.
I grew up poor, so I'd have a hard time wasting the money, as it has great value to me. I'm sure I'd buy, go or do things that some would seem was a waste but hey, it's my lucky winnings, right?
$14 million could go quick, or a long way, depending on your control or lack there of. Thanks for the oportunity to list out the "what if" dreams, if you really stop to think about it the list would get pretty long and eventually too long.

As UcanDoit points out, the actual amount you'd end up with is significantly less than the pot. However, I'd take that $14m, bank it, and live off the interest.

OK, yeah, I'd have to splurge a bit. I would definitely upgrade my instruments. And take more music lessons. And there are a couple of cars I'd like to own. And a new house.

I too am appalled at the thought of buying a very expensive instrument just to destroy it. I've always cringed when I see people smashing instruments. Such a WASTE! I wouldn't care if the thing was made entirely by machines -- there are a lot of people who could benefit from having the instrument. It's SO much more rewarding to create something than it is to destroy stuff.

A million would be all I would ever want, anything more would go to charity. A million would be enough to pay off the house for my parents, put me and my brother through school, get us both enough gear to satisfy any GAS ever, and still leave plenty for my parents to live comfortably and Dad won't have to work nearly as much.

You're in a room full of guitar aficionados, fans and freaks...why would you expect a different response?
That's like going into a VFW lodge and ripping up a flag. You're messing with something that people treasure.
A joke? Sure, but as I wrote above, just not a funny one.
