Forgive me for all these questions I am hitting the boards with recently.

I'm very happy to have found this communtiy and...well...you know how excitable we newbies can be.

Todays question is...has anyone ever used the Hal Leonard Play Along DVD's?

Will I be able to actually learn how to play the songs that come with it? Is it that basic?

The 1st song I'm very eager to learn is Free's "All Right Now"

Here's a link to the product description:

I have an instructional DVD by Ubi Soft called "Classic Rock Guitar". That is a really good instructional play-along DVD, but I hate the songs. Not very motivating.

I have that DVD and I was greatly let down by it. There is just about no instruction at all. After a brief introduction, you choose one of three views to watch:

1. Frethand with the TAB
2. Wide view with TAB (Both hands)
3. Both hands close-up but No TAB

The video is basically you watching a video of the song being played at regular speed with or without TAB at the bottom. There is no instruction at all. No explanation. If you feel that you can learn by just watching him play it over and over then it is okay for that. Some people learn just by watching without any assistance. Not too good for me though.

Lick Library has note by note walk throughs of songs that are very well made and teach everything. The big problem with them is that they have NO TAB at all so you are forced to find your own copy of the TAB/Sheet music.

I did see this on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cu3AHl36UIM. Not fantastic but it is free!

I have a realllllllllly slow computer at home - AOL dial up.

My work computer is extremely fast.

can I record these Lick Library lessons for home use, once I become a member?

I have found that they are pretty easy to save to your computer. I use the Firefox browser (free on the internet), and the download helper plug-in (also available on the internet). I would install and test these before joining just to be sure that they are up and running. Once the download helper is installed, it is just a single click to start downloading the video. Heck I have downloaded a ton of free programming tutorials from Youtube using Firefox!

Also, you don't have to join Lick Library if you don't want to. They also sell about a bazillion DVD's. Again, they have some wonderful song tutorials, I just wish that they included TAB/Standard Notation as well

You also might want to check out Justin Sandercoe's web site. He has about 500 training videos ranging from "this is a guitar" to some pretty advanced stuff. He is also a fantastic teacher who covers his intended subjects in great detail but in a nice comfortable manner. Oh, and his site is free although he does sell DVDs too!
