I have 350+ vinyl albums in storage about 1200 miles away. I really miss them. Some of my favorite covers were Sgt. Pepper, Eat A Peach (inside), In the Court of the Crimson King. I have the original Sticky Fingers album by the Stones with the cover designed by Andy Warhol that had a real working zipper on the front.

Unfortunately the first "Album Cover Album" is no longer in print, although there are still some silly people who have it for sale on EBay. There are two others that followed it, but I don't know if they are still available or not. I miss the album cover almost as much as I miss vinyl records. Digital music, although clean, clear an precise, is sterile. It has no soul. Give me the warmth and feeling of vinyl anytime, even with it's pops and clicks as it ages. I have somewhere around 1000 albums. The majority of them still in excellent condition and I will never part with them. The only reason I broke down and bought a CD player about ten years ago is that I was tired of not having any new music to listen to and I finally caved. I'm so happy to see vinyl making a well deserved comeback :-)

Album cover art was a HUGE part of the thrill of buying a new album, they were big and bright, just seemed like you were making some substantial purchase of new music. And I'm a die hard KISS fan, obviously, and the album art was usually very cool on their discs. Plus all the inserts for the fan club, posters, tattoos, booklets, cool stuff. Can't fit all that in a cd case.

I still have around 600 vinyls and when I get to move on my music room there will be a turntable installed there as well. In general all of mine are in pretty good shape, I usually bought them and transferred each to cassette right away to preserve them.

There's no denying the portability of cd's and mp3's, after all turntables in a car aren't too practical, but vinyl still sounds warmer and less sterile overall. I'd like to see like an "lp flat" of the cover art with a cd, that'd be cool. The whole notion is probably just proof of my living in the past. :D

Album art is a classic form of Art in my opinion! I have 2000+ Albums.

Here are some of them ( sorry about the quality of the pic )

And here's one of my walls. I can change albums when I feel like it. And I do often since there are sooo many great albums!

The Rod Stewart and Ron Wood are autographed by each.

i remember enjoying reading liner notes and all the extra information contained within while listening to the album for the first time. I still have my pioneer turntable, with a missing needle. Can't part with it. Still have quite a few albums including one signed by all the Ventures. Another fave is the picture in the record. Still have my Linda Ronstadt picture disc. Sometimes new is not necessarily better.

I remember the first "poster" I got from a cassette. It had nine million folds in it. Just not the same. The cardboard cutouts that came with my Sgt Pepper album are still intact after nearly 44 years. Wish I still had the pix and poster from the White Album.

If you go to flea-bay or CL, you can sometimes find the White Album with all original material for short money. The vinyl may be questionable but if you have good vinyl and only want the inserts, it can be worth it.

Ah the good 'ol days of vinyl. I've got a related story, not about cover art, but vinyl vs. cd.

About 12 years ago, my bandmate worked in a comic book/record store that also sold cd's., and I went in there to talk to him about our next gig. This young girl came up to the counter and asked about a Marylin Manson picture disc hangin on the wall. She asked what it was. My bandmate replied "it's a picture disc." Cool, so I put it my laser disc player and I'll see all of his videos? asked the girl. No. replied my bandmate, you put it on your record player and watch it go round and round while your listening to the music.

What's a record player?, the girl replied.

We both could'nt believe what we were hearing.

After this experience, I don't think cover art will ever be the same.

Complete, total, absolute agreement with Solid Body Love Songs, on page 1.

If it's in a computer, television, game console or cell phone, the coming generation can do it and watch it. All of it.

The whole "remainder" of the universe, if those devices are not accessible, well....

Daughters were amazed when they were in university, how few fellow students could assemble furniture, put air in their tires, sew a separated seam, wire a stereo, cook a meal from scratcch, check their oil....

Actually between LP's & CD's, cassettes albums started to be the dominant format--now that killed cover art more than CD's--and liner notes were either non-existent, brief or very tiny.

Very true... and iTunes killed the Album itself. Buying a record used to be a visceral experience. I couldn't wait to listen to the tracks how it was intended... IN ORDER, Read the credits to see what names in the engineering staff i may recognize from other works, read the lyrics, of course Check out the Art, especially on the Maiden Records, and just enjoy an hour of hard earned and well spent money. those days are gone. I'm glad Pink Floyd does not allow iTunes to sell their songs individually as far as i know but I've never bought from iBafoons store.
