Get rid of the "junk" first Nevin, keep the guitars there may be a big hole getting rid of the guitars you can always get more junk eh, I remember you being stoked when you aquiered( that word don't look right) the LP and jazzmaster, financial needs have to be met I know and a roof over your head is a priority if it comes to the crunch I hope you get a few good offers.

Finances for a house you want seems to be your motivation.

You will get your prices if the right buyers want your guitars.

After you buy your house, take out a second mortgage and buy
more guitars. Simple economics 101. :D

I wouldn't get rid of the Jazzmaster if I were you as pre CBS Fenders are not really going for a premium these days but still they are becoming increasingly rare.Non of the current Jazzmasters could come close to the old '63 for sound and playability. I think that if you decide to put the money you get for it towards a house you most likely will regret parting with it down the road.If you do sell anything, get rid of the newer stuff as it is more readily replaceable in the future but to replace a pre CBS Fender could prove costly in the future especially once this slump in the economy is over.

Nevin,
Rock and a hard place for sure. Get the best deal you can on the house and the guitars, and in the end you should wind up with a house that has a music room. More space for more guitars

Good luck,
John.E

Nevin, I wouldnt buy a house if I was you- not yet anyways. Interest rates are going to sky rocket up in the USA, you would actually be better off continuously saving your money untill things clear up. The more you save, the less you will pay later down the line.

Nevin,

Do what you gotta do. If you are financially stable then buy the house. If you have to sell a couple guitars to make it work, you might not be there just yet...no judgement here...but only you can know.

If it were me, and I could do it without selling the Jazzmaster, then go for it, the VOS might be a great guitar but they are still making them, the Jazzmaster not...keep us posted on what you decide, we are with you either way.

FWIW

Hey, Nevin!

I'm slowly approaching the point you seem to be getting close to. I should be starting to sell some guitars and I know it, but I can't seem to follow through on it. I recently sold a nice little electric 12-string I bought new in 1995 (first guitar I've sold since 1999...) and I got more than I paid for it by about double, but then I turned around and bought another guitar instead of banking the proceeds, though I did have hundreds left over, now tucked away in my sock drawer.

Net change in number of guitars owned - zero.

My wife and I are currently living above our means in a big Craftsman house in a nice neighborhood full of 100-year-old oaks and maples. We are nearing retirement and planning on selling our 2-3/4 story, moving soon enough into a one-level ranch (too many stairs here) that we can afford to grow old in, hopefully outside the city limits and out of reach of the steadily rising property taxes we are facing now.

A move would necessitate a great reduction in the number of guitars and amps currently crowding the Music Room, many of them nice collectors acquired in the 90s during my heavy performing years in Minnesota. I think my kids would refuse to help me move them all, unless they went to their homes...

Keep us posted on how this works for you. Maybe if you can do it, I can do it. Of course, a lot depends on the used guitar market... :|

I would not sell any Pre-CBS instrument right now unless absolutely necessary. Pre-CBS stuff has about dried up.

I'd sell the reissue and lower echelon value instruments first.

To sell the really good stuff I'd first get an appraisal from Gruhn Guitars in Nashville Offer him the chance to sell them for you. You might realize a higher sale price, but will have to pay the sales commission.

Good luck!

I think you'd get your best ROI going the consignment route.

ROI = (Return on investment)

:( I hate to tell you but in several years you'll regret it my friend. I know I always did eventually. At least you're doing it for a good cause.
