Buddy Holly must have been playing that '57 for years and years to get all that wear on the fingerboard.

Hey, wait a minute...

Okay, a few years ago the Fender Custom Shop was allowed to spec out and clean up Sir Buddy's Stratocaster. I seem to remember reading about it in Guitar Player :?:
One of the cool little "surprises" was a pick found underneath the pickguard.

Here's a pic of John Page (of the Fender Custom Shop) holding Mr. Holly's Strat after cleaning and restoration:

There were reports that the Custom Shop was to release a tribute replica sometime in 2010, but as far as I know, there has never been a Buddy Holly Signature Strat nor has there been a Custom Shop model (like the exact replicas of Clapton's "Blackie", SRV's "#1" and "Lenny", or Muddy Waters' "Hoss"). If there has been one, it was an extremely limited release, because I never heard about it and I am interested in most things relating to Buddy (my fellow Texican).

Difficulty in dealing with Maria Elena might have something to do with the absence of any kind of Buddy Holly tribute/signature model/whatever. (I hold Maria Elena in the same regard as NikiNinja holds Janie Hendrix).

The fact that Buddy Holly was playing a (basically) dead-stock 1958 (not 1957) Strat with three-color sunburst finish and a maple fretboard (interesting, rare, but not unique) might have something to do with the reason he has never had a signature model, too.

The first pic is not Buddy's guitar; his '58 (at least the third Strat he owned, by the way--several previous Strats--a '55 & '57 were stolen) is in dang near mint condition...considering he only owned/played it for a short period of time, that's why his would not have the wear and tear of the pic you posted.

The second pic is a different guitar. If you actually own it, you probably have a really nice 50s reissue of some sort (I don't know if it's MIA, MIJ, CIJ or MIM from the picture provided). It is vaguely similar to Buddy Holly's Strat--a dead-stock sunburst with simple white pickguard--but that is a two-color, not three and the grain doesn't even vaguely match. Those aren't even pictures of the same guitar.

At best, you have a Strat similar to what Buddy Holly owned.

If I can give you a bit of advice:
You're very enthusiastic, and that's cool.
I assume you're young, and that's cool, too--we have a lot of young members of this forum that contribute a lot.
You seem interested in some cool music--Buddy Holly (or Holley, if you want to spell it like his birth certificate), Brian Setzer, etc. It warms my heart that there's still young people interested in that style/era of music.

Chill out a little. We know you once played a Gretsch through a HRDlx. That's cool..but don't tell us in every post you make.
We know you are trying to figure out what amps, pedals, guitars, etc. make what sounds (we all are!), but don't argue with us when we tell you what gear does what.

Be cool, and keep rockin'...but don't try to impress us with stuff that just can't be true.

Impress us by making some progress as a player, collector and enthusiast.

Hi SA: and if I remember right that particular Strat of Buddy's was also found to have an unusual (but stock) piece of aluminum shielding across the top of the control cavity, as opposed to the back of the pickguard as would be more common.

BTW: two or three years ago we had a guy in the Strat section of the Forum who was very serious about claiming he had a "long lost" Buddy Holly Strat. I think Buddy had either one or two Strats stolen - is that right? The guy was completely wrong - either he was attempting a scam or genuinely believed in what he was saying, I wouldn't like to judge. I seem to recall that thread got very heated and quite entertaining.

Frustratingly, since the "search" button no longer goes back beyond the beginning of this year I can't dig out that thread for another look-see. But maybe someone can be bothered to hunt it down.

We've had a lot of people claiming to have guitars that aren't what they say here on the Forum...

Cheers - C

I seem to remember that, too, but I'm not near my old GP magazines to look that up. Since moving, I can't find anything. :?

I've read he had two stolen--a 1955 and a 1957.

Two words: Vinny Pop :)

I don't mean to be unkind to the guy (or kid, which ever the case may be), but with his non-sequitors he's just drained the lifeforce out of several threads that were going pretty good.

I get too long-winded on subjects I'm interested in, but Good Lord, I try to keep on topic...unless Epic Footwear is needed.

Remember the OP's only about 13. If that guitar is really his, and I seriously doubt it because I remember seeing that photo and the Berber carpet before. (Yeah I used to be partners in a carpet cleaning business). If it was Buddy's guitar, why would you even clean it? I don't even think he lived long enough to put that kind of wear on it. The big clue is has anyone noticed the website guitarHQ.com in the case on the photo?

There's nothing unusual about it, its the type of shielding that was used on strats when they were introduced in 54 until they changed to the full size shielding behind the guard, not sure what year the transition happened, I thought it was around the time they added the ledge in the body cavity for the additional screw.
Here 's the full article on the restoration with pix http://www.buddyhollyonline.com/guitar.html

OK, I checked and the transition year from 8 to 11 screws on the guard was 59
