Whenever I try and remember the story about who first took the covers off humbuckers I get it wrong. I always think it was Santana around the time of Woodstock - but that isn't right, is it?

Somebody here will know for sure.

Anyhow: Tim, now you've got me all curious as to what Tele lipstick pickups sound like uncovered. I wonder if I'll take the cover off mine next time I'm restringing and give it a try? Maybe not - because I'm afraid I might find I like it! I kinda prefer the look of the metal cover better - be frustrating to discover that conflicted with my tone preference!

Oh dear: that seems to be me putting looks ahead of sound. That ain't very right on, is it...?

Cheers - C

Nope, wasn't Carlos. The guitar he played at Woodstock had the old P-90 pups in it. Gibson made that SG body style for a few years, with the "Les Paul" name on it, then switched back to the familiar body style. Those guitars were derived from the L.P. Jr., which just had a single P-90 and when they added a second one, the "Jr." designation came off. The SG-bodied L.P.'s made a comeback between 1960 and '62, and by then had the humbuckers. A former boss of mine has one of them that he bought new while he was in the service. Hard telling how much that thing is worth today!!

The covers mellow the tone a tad and help in shielding. But you are right, you get improved clarity with them off. That is one reason the first generation P-Bass sounds so in your face, clarity.

Tim, it's a cool look, as long as you like it and have no shielding/ noise problems, you're golden.

No more noise than was normal with them covered. I've never worried too much about noise with single coils; I look at it kind of like listening to vinyl, the extra hums, hisses and pops add some character to the sound. And now with the covers removed, I'd be hard pressed to find a set of pups I like better. So yeah, I'm golden

Very cool indeed. Seems like you went into it with a great understanding of noise issues. I'm the same way. I only need to be silent when I'm not playing. That's what the guitars volume control is for.

+1...now we need to educate all the s/c haters on use of the volume knob as well.

I can be one of the best effects you have right at your fingertips. I see lots of guy constantly running back and forth adjusting the amps volume control instead of the guitar's. That usually changes as you get older and you don't feel like doing all the walking.

I'm not very old yet, but I don't see the need to run back and forth either, I'm constantly messing with my volume and tone on my guitars. A totally different sonic palette opens up when you roll back the volume, and then of course with the tone rolled back.
