How do we know what "reissue" means?

* Is "reissue" a casual term to mean any discontinued model that is revived, whether to original specs, or as an approximation, for example by Squier?

* Does Fender control the use and meaning of "reissue" for its models?

* Are there criteria in a formal definition set by some official sanctioning group?

It means "like something we used to make... maybe exactly like, maybe kinda like."

Official sanctioning group? Nobody's health or well-being is at stake here. It's just a word they use to mean, "all vintage-y like."

*I'm sure they try to keep as close to original specs as possible relative to the model's pricing.

*Fender only uses the word "reissue" on guitars modeled after that of a specific year, I'm sure they could use it on other models, such as the classic series, but it wouldn't be correct terminology really.

*I doubt there is an official governing body that decides what can and cannot be dubbed a reissue.

And welcome to the forum.

My '63 Re-issue Vibroverb isn't an exact replica of a brown face/brown Tolex '63 Vibroverb, but it look like (and more importantly) sounds like the original.

It's a good "In the spirit of..." reproduction.

Likewise for my '62 Re-issue Stratocaster.

Thanks Tochai, SA, and EF,

what you're saying is in line with what I've thought. Here's more specifically where my question is coming from...

a guy claims my 2010 Squier Vintage Vibe '59 Duo-Sonic is not a "reissue". I get the sense he thinks "reissue" is too cool for a Squier.

I like this Duo-Sonic a lot and it makes no real difference to my playing if it's a reissue or not. But just out of curiousity, does it make any difference that Squier, not Fender, makes this close approximation of the 1959 Fender Duo-Sonic?

Well, you notice that Fender does not refer to the guitar as a reissue, but simply as having a "vintage vibe."

So, there ya go. I think your guy is right.

All I can say is my '62 RI Pbass is fantastic. Is it exact? I can't know that. But it doesn't matter to me.

Well, some of us older guys were around when there were Pre CBS guitars hanging on walls of music stores and we and our friends owned some...the "Reissue" guitars are not exact copies of those old ones,I have three different RI's and they are just Strats with modern components and necks that are similar to the vintage guitars...the Fender Custom Shop takes that farther and make models closely copied from original specs and guitars they have examined.
The pickups on Reissues are patterned after a few originals, but there are some boutique pickup makers that offer sets that are close copies also.
So in my opinion,a Reissue is similar to the originals...but not at all an exact copy.
