I only have one PF album. And I am not that big of a fan, though I do like some of their stuff. But I find Gilmour a unique guitarist in that he plays very colorful solos.

Ex. 1:

the notes played at 4:27-4:40

Ex.2:

the notes played at 5:05-5:13

Those solos are masterpieces. I like how the solos roar along. Very unique.

What do you think?

Hi lungimsam: Dave is a player who hears it in his head - probably when he doesn't even have the guitar in his hands - and then works out how to play it. That means that his soloing has a very vocal, melody-driven quality to it, which I expect is what leads to him so often topping polls of people's all time favorite guitar players.

He's all about constructing solos that have musical meaning, rather than mere exhibitions of mind-boggling technique. There's a lesson for us in there somewhere...

BTW: what has always secretly irritated me about that film is Nick Mason's horrible amateur "wrists sideways" stick grip. It just looks so awful and clumsy as he moves around the kit. Yuk! I've long suspected that the slow tempo "Floyd time" has much to do with the limitations of Mason's technique.

In other words, we want musicality first and foremost. But some decent technique is also by no means a bad thing.

Cheers - C

Nicks fumbling on the drums is what makes Pink Floyd great.

Rogers brilliant lyrics, mediocre bass playing, and not so great singing voice is what makes Pink Floyd great.

Ricks slow and melodic organ and piano are so full of soul it's quite amazing. That's what makes Pink Floyd great.

I don't think anyone could say anything bad about David Gilmour. Except Roger ofcourse.

Almost 40 years later I still think the Time solo is one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded. 20 seconds of pure brilliance there at the end.

Time is my favourite Floyd track and my favourite Gilmour solo.

I rarely learn solos note for note but I had to learn that one. The section you identified is the one fingered slide up the D triad. Clumsy as hell, but it just doesnt work any other way! Add in Waters's incredibly perceptive lyrics, and Time is a masterpiece.

Thanks for the excuse to hear it again.. lol
