On the subject of alternate materials, I have a Yamaha RGX A2 which is not unlike Danolectrics in construction. A thin hardwood outer shell stuffed with softwood and buried resonating tubes connected to the bridge. At under £300 (slightly shop soiled) it's a spookily good guitar with superb sustain. It weighs about 5lbs and the pick-up selector knob glows blue/green via battery powered LEDs in a transparent plastic ring around the knob itself.

It's a little beauty - you can feel the whole intrument pulsing with the string vibrations. It feels completely alive. If that's the sort of thing I may expect in a hardwood free future, then I guess I can cope. I can recommend the brief video below:
